Columbus Academy, the co-champion of the Mid-State Ohio Division with Newark Catholic, is on a roll in the OHSAA tournament.

They defeated Cardington in the first round and on Wednesday night, they eliminated Berne Union, 63-44 in a Division III game at Grove City Central Crossing.

Zach Ratcliff reached a milestone in his high school career during game, scoring his 1,000th point.

The Columbus Academy Vikings thought they missed out on a chance to tie or even win the Ohio Division of the Mid-State League when they lost last Tuesday at Granville.

Adding to that disappointment was the fact that Newark Catholic beat Heath to take a half-game lead.

The two teams, Academy and Newark Catholic split their two meetings this season.

Friday night February 17 came around and it was Senior Night and the Vikings were hosting arch-rival Bexley and the game was on HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE, where Academy always plays well.

Academy head coach Chris Jones knew he needed his team to respond to the challenge of Senior Night and the chance to tie for the MSL Ohio Division title.

The Vikings left no doubt that they were re-focused with a resounding 79-54 win over Bexley.

The Vikings not only came away with the win but also a tie for the MSL Ohio title with Newark Catholic who lost to Licking Valley.

Licking Valley simply destroyed the Green Wave, 60-40 as Ricky Wilson scored 20 and Hayden Ourant added 19.

The Vikings’ five senior played the final home game of their careers and leave a winner: Ben Bechtel, Stephen Casey, Jacob Mikalov, Tim Eldridge and Zach Ratcliff.

The Vikings started the game on a mission. They got the ball relentlessly inside to take advantage of the fact that they have taller players that are hard to defend: Mikalov at 6’8, Daniel Aronowitz, Aakaash Paladuga and Ratcliff who are all 6’4. Bexley’s has no one over 6’4 and their best defender is Jalen Robinette, and even he had problems defending under the basket.

Mikalov took control of the game for Academy with 13 points in the first quarter as the Vikings push out to a 24-12 lead.

The halftime score was 38-20 Academy.

The third quarter ended with the Vikings up 59-37 and they cruised from their.

The Buckeye Muffler & Brake Player of the Game was Mikalov who led all scorers with a career-high 31 points with eight rebounds and six blocked shots.

Mikalov had plenty of help in the scoring column as Eldridge scored 12 points, Aronowitz and Ratcliff with 11 each.

The Vikings were 19 of 26 from the free throw line and they committed just 11 turnovers. They ended the regular season at 16-4 overall, 12-2 in the MSL Ohio.

The Bexley Lions ended the regular season a disappointing at 7-13, 4-10.

The Lions were led by Sam Nolan with 13 and Robinette with 12.

Bexley could not create free throw opportunities as they were only 2 of 6 and only had 7 turnovers.

Bexley does not have the stable of players like they had during their glory days. The past 5 years, they’ve had Jon Primes, who graduated last year, and Robinette, and no one else to go with them.
