The Cincinnati Reds have acquired right-handed starting pitcher Mat Latos from the San Diego Padres for a package of four players: infielder Yonder Alonso, right-handed starting pitcher Edinson Volquez, minor league catcher Yasmani Grandal and right-hander Brad Boxberger.

Alonso did have a position in Cincinnati with Joey Votto at first base. Volquez was a big disappointment at 5-7 with a 5.71 ERA.

The Reds wanted a top of the rotation pitcher and they have one in Latos. The 23-year-old went 9-14 with a 3.47 ERA for the Padres in 2011. He finished among the NL leaders in ERA and strikeouts.
