39-year-old Alex Rodriguez can still hit the baseball for distance.

The Yankees controversial third baseman moved past Hall of Famer Willie Mays for fourth place on the all-time MLB career home run list, by blasting his 661st Thursday night in a 4-3 win over division-rival Baltimore.

Next on the home run list for Rodriguez is Babe Ruth with 714.

The new Yankee Stadium will be the scene of the 2011 version of the Pinstripe Bowl which has Iowa State (6-6) against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-4).

The Pinstripe Bowl is nothing new to Rutgers. They beat Army last year and returns after losing its chance of a BCS game and a share of the Big East title after losing to Connecticut in the season finale.

Iowa State is a dangerous team who can score points. The Cyclones scored 44 on Iowa, 41  at Texas Tech and 37 against Oklahoma State.

The Scarlet Knights have won four straight bowl games and are led by WR Mohamed Sanu, who at 6’2, 215-pounds set a new Big East record for receptions in a season with 109 for 1,144 yards and seven touchdowns.

Meyer names Tom Herman as offensive coordinator/QB’s coach

Tom Herman (photo courtesy of OSU athletics)

Tom Herman, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Iowa State University the past three years, and before that the same position for record-setting offenses at Rice University, has been named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State by new head coach Urban Meyer.

Herman’s 2011 Iowa State offense, which he will coach on December 30 in the Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers at Yankee Stadium, averages 181.2 rushing yards and 211.7 passing yards per game. The Cyclones put up 44 points in a triple-overtime win over Iowa and accumulated 37 in a double-overtime upset of then-undefeated and then-#2 Oklahoma State.

“To work with and for Coach Meyer is an exciting opportunity for me,” Herman said. “i am really looking forward to working with him and learning his offensive systems. And to be able to coach with him at The Ohio State University is simply a dream come true.”

Herman was born in Cincinnati and still has family there, although he was raised in Simi Valley, California. He played collegiately at California Lutheran, graduating in 1997 with a degree in business administration. He earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Texas.

Herman has 11 years of experience as a college coach, including seven seasons as an offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, and 13 when his two seasons, 1999-2000, as a graduate assistant at Texas are included. He coached four years at Sam Houston State (2001-04), serving as receivers coach and special teams coordinator. He also spent two years at Texas State (2005-06) and two years at Rice (2007-08) as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

While his Texas State offenses led the Southland Conference in total offense each season, his stint at Rice was really notable. His offenses broke over 40 school records and in his second season the Owls won 10 games and went to a bowl for the first time since 1954.

Furthermore, Rice ranked in the Top 10 nationally in 2008 in passing offense (5th; 327.8), scoring offense (T8th; 41.6) and total offense (10th; 472.3). Two Rice receivers had more than 1,300 yards receiving that year, tight end James Casey had 111 catches and quarterback Chase Clement was the Conference USA MVP.

Herman and his wife, Michelle, have a daughter, Priya, and a son, Maddock.

Two wins in a row for National League; Fielder, pitching stars

The National League, the past two All-Star Games, have show the same formula it displayed in the 1970′s and 80′s, pitching, speed, defense and power-hitting.

Prince Fielder supplied the power with a three-run homer, Roy Halladay and the relief corp shut the AL on a six-hitter to lead the National League to a 5-1 win at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

This is the first two-game winning streak by the National League since the mid-1990′s. The National League’s best run since taking three in a row from 1994-96. They had lost 12 straight games before winning 3-1 at Anaheim in 2010.

The senior circuit claimed home-field advantage in the World Series.

Adrian Gonzalez supplied the only A.L. run with a homer off of Cliff Lee to give the American League a 1-0 lead that didn’t last long.

The home runs by Fielder and Gonzalez were the first in the All-Star Game since 2008 when J.D. Drew belted one at Yankee Stadium.

Tyler Clippard earned the win despite giving up a single to the only batter he faced, Adrian Beltre, which got Jose Bautista thrown out at the plate. He was followed by Clayton Kershaw, Jair Jurrgens, Craig Kimbrall, Jonny Venters, Heath Bell, Joel Hanrahan and Brian Wilson who turned out the lights on the junior circuit.

Texas’ lefty C.J. Wilson, who gave up the home run to Fielder, which bounced off the yellow line in left-center field and out of the park, was the loser.

Fielder, who always seems to have a frown on his face, was all smiles during the game. He won the MVP award after becoming the first Brewers player to hit a home run in an All-Star Game.

With players on both sides dropping out due to various injuries, the total was 16.

Jeter’s in the 3,000 hit club going 5-for-5 against Rays

Derek Jeter (courtesy of MLBpressbox.com)

Derek Jeter reached the 3,000 hit plateau in fitting fashion on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays, going 5-for-5 and hit a home run for the magic hit.

Jeter became the first Yankee ever to reach 3,000 hits and the 28th MLB player to join the exclusive club.

The Yankees captain hit his first home run of the year at Yankee Stadium and by going 5-for-5, he tied a career high. He also singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning in the 5-4 win.

Tampa Bay lefty David Price will go into the record book as the pitcher who gave up the milestone hit.

Jeter, eventhough he is 37 years old, plays like a player in his 20′s.

The milestone ball, one of the marked ones put in to play for special occasions by MLB, landed in the hands of 23-year-old Christian Lopez of Highland Park, New York who was sitting in section 236. He told members of the media that he would give the ball back to the Yankees and Jeter. His reward will be four tickets to every game for the rest of the season and autographed memorabilia.
