Prospal given one-year contract extension by Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS, OHIOThe Columbus Blue Jackets have signed left wing Vinny Prospal to a one-year contract extension through the 2012-13 season, according to club Executive Vice President and General Manager Scott Howson.

Prospal, 36, has registered nine goals and 24 assists for 33 points and 18 penalty minutes in 53 games with the Blue Jackets this season. He ranks second on the club in points and is third (tied) in goals. He was signed as a free agent by Columbus on July 23, 2011.

“We are very excited to have Vinny signed for another year,” said Howson. “His leadership and play on the ice have certainly been positives for us this season.”

Philadelphia’s second pick, 71st overall, in the 1993 Entry Draft, Prospal made his NHL debut with the Flyers in 1996-97 and has collected 236-477-713 and 531 penalty minutes in 1,031 career games with Philadelphia, Ottawa, Florida, Tampa Bay, Anaheim, NY Rangers and Columbus during his 14-plus NHL seasons. He has registered five 20-goal seasons, eight campaigns with 50 or more points and missed just 13 games in eight seasons from 2001-10, appearing in 643-of-656 contests during that span.  He has also appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs nine times, tallying 10-25-35 and 26 penalty minutes in 65 games.

The Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic native has represented his country in international competition on several occasions, including at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy. He played in the 2004 and 2005 World Championships, winning the gold medal in 2005, and in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey tournament. Prospal also represented the Czech Republic at the 1994 and 1995 World Junior Championships.

Russia takes down Canada in junior hockey semifinals

Russia stopped Canada’s comeback attempt and advanced to the world junior championship finals, winning 6-5 in the semis.

Canada had made every junior championship round since 2002.

Russia takes on Sweden in the gold medal game.

Sweden advanced by beating Finland 3-2.

The Canadians trailed 6-1 in the third period and scored four unanswered goals but could not get the tying tally late in the game.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman James Wisniewski to a six-year contract.

The Blue Jackets acquired Wisniewski’s rights from the Montreal Canadiens for a seventh round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft on Wednesday. With his signing, that pick will now be elevated to a fifth round selection in 2012.

The 27-year-old Wisniewski has registered 27 goals and 121 assists for 148 points with 302 penalty minutes and a +5 plus/minus rating in 329 career NHL games with Montreal, the New York Islanders, Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks.

Last year, he combined for 10-41-51 and 38 penalty minutes in 75 games with the Islanders and Canadiens, including 7-23-30 and 20 penalty minutes in 43 games with Montreal. He tied for fifth among NHL defenseman in points and was seventh in assists in setting career highs in goals, assists and points.

The Canton, Michigan native has also represented Team USA at a pair of World Junior Championship tournaments and at the 2008 World Championships. In 2003, he tallied 0-4-4 and six penalty minutes in seven games to help Team USA win the gold medal. At the 2008 World Championships, he had 1-2-3 and six penalty minutes in six games.

Ian Clark hired as Blue Jackets new goaltending coach

The Columbus Blue Jackets have hired Ian Clark as their new goaltending coach.

Clark most recently was the goaltending and consultant coach for the Vancouver Canucks from 2002-2010.

In addition to spending eight years with the Canucks organization, Clark was a member of Team Canada’s coaching staff at the World Junior Championships from 2003-2006, winning silver medals in 2003 and 2004 and capturing gold in 2005 and 2006. He also was the goaltending consultant for the Florida Panthers in 2001-2002. The list of goaltenders he has tutored includes Mathieu Garon, Johan Hedberg, Andrew Raycroft, Cory Schneider, Marc-Andre Fleury, Roberto Luongo and Cam Ward.

Clark was born on May 12, 1966 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He and his wife, Deborah, are the parents of sons, Morgan, Christopher, Collins, Samuel, Jason and Blake.

The 45-year-old Clark, is recognized as a leading educator of the goaltending position as his knowledge and innovative approach has attracted high-performance goaltenders at the NHL, minor pro, major junior and NCAA levels. He was the founder of the Goaltender Development Institute and served as technical author of From the Crease-The Self Development Guide to Hockey Goaltending from 1998-2003 and The Goalie News from 2003-2008.

CBJ’s Nash named captain for Team Canada at 2011 IIHF Hockey Championships

 

Hockey Canada announced earlier in the week that Columbus Blue Jackets left wing Rick Nash has been named captain for Team Canada at the 2011 IIHF World Championships, which are taking place currently through May 15 in Bratislava and Kosice, Slovakia.

Hockey Canada has also announced four alternate captains who will split these duties over the course of the event: Atlanta Thrashers left wing Andrew Ladd, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf, Ottawa Senators Jason Spezza and New Jersey Devils Travis Zajac.

The 26-year-old Nash, is a five-time NHL All-Star who led the Blue Jackets in scoring with 32-34-66 in 75 games this season. The native of Brampton, Ontario is a Team Canada veteran having represented his country at the 2010 and 2006 Olympic Games, the 2008, 2007 and 2005 World Championships and the 2002 World Junior Championships.

Nash has won gold medals at the 2010 Olympics and the 2007 World Championships (All-Tournament Team selection) and earned a silver medal at the 2008 and 2005 (All-Tournament Team) World Championships and 2002 WJC tournament.
