Canada earns way into world quarterfinals

Dion Phaneuf scored two goals and Devan Dubnyk stopped 24 shots on goal to lead Canada to an 8-0 crushing of Kazakhstan in the world hockey championship in Helsinki, Finland.

Blue Jackets’ Johnson helps USA in rout of France


New Columbus Blue Jackets star Jack Johnson is making a name for himself on the world hockey stage as well.

Johnson, Bobby Ryan, Max Pacioretty, Jim Slater and Jeff Petry all scored a goal in USA’s 7-2 rout of France in the Group A game.

New York Islanders forward Kyle Okposo scored two goals for the U.S. team in the first game of the world hockey championship in Helsinki.

The USA plays Canada on Saturday (today).

The always-tough Canadians won their opener vs. Slovakia, 3-2.

Comrie retires from NHL due to 3rd hip surgery in five years

Mike Comrie, who scored at least 30 goals in a season, retired from the National Hockey League after having a third hip operation in the past five years.

The 31-year-old former University of Michigan standout retired two weeks after his recent hip surgery.

Due to the injury, he was limited to 127 games the past three years.

He finished his career last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Comrie had just one goal and five assists in 21 games and was an unrestricted free agent when he retired.

The winner of a gold medal for Canada in the 2002 world hockey championship, he is the husband of singer/actress Hilary Duff. The couple is expecting their first child in March.

Comrie played for Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ottawa, the Islanders and Pittsburgh, totaling 589 regular-season games, 168 goals, 197 assists. In 32 career playoff games, he scored four goals with six assists.

Comrie was born in Edmonton and started his NHL career with the Oilers during the 2000-2001 season. The next season, 2001-2002, he scored 33 goals.
