The “B” Team wins the Gold medal as U.S. wins world basketball championship

When the United States basketball team headed overseas to play in the world basketball championships, everybody called them the “B” team because Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, et al. were not participating. Most media outlets were saying that they would be done after a handful of games.

The “B” team might be as good as the “A” team as far as United States basketball is concerned.

United States pushes aside Russia; advances to world basketball semifinals

Mike Bantom may not be a household name today in basketball with today’s youngsters and basketball fans. But he is known to the older generation of basketball fans because he played on the United States team that lost 38 years ago to the Russians in a game that had a controversial ending and several suspect calls by the referees. The final score was 51-50 in the 1972 Olympic games in Munich, Germany.

Mike Bantom is the NBA’s senior vice president of player development and he is currently traveling with the American team that’s playing in the world basketball championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

The American squad told Mike Bantom that they would beat Russia and they did, 89-79.

Kevin Durant scored 33 points to lead the United States to within two wins of its first world basketball championship since 1994.

The win came on the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s win over the American’s for the 1972 Olympic gold medal, where players on the U.S. squad refused to accept their silver medals.

Durant shot the ball well, 11 of 19 and just came up short of tying Carmelo Anthony’s world championship team record of 35 points, set in 2006.

The United States will play Saturday against Lithuania, who beat Argentina 104-85. The host country, Turkey, will play Serbia in the other semifinal.
