Brendan Gibbons kicked a 37-yard field goal in overtime to give 13th-ranked Michigan to a 23-20 win over #17 Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.

The win ended a comeback to the heights of college football for the Michigan program under first-year head coach Brady Hoke, who led the Wolverines to an 11-2 record a BCS game.

QB Denard Robinson did not dominate the game, but threw touchdown passes of 45 and 18 yards to Junior Hemingway.

Robinson was 9 of 21 passes for 117 yards for 117 yards and an interception and rushed for only 13 yards.

Hemingway was selected as the player of the game for his two-touchdown effort. He finished the game with two pass receptions for 63 yards.

Virginia Tech, who finished the year at 11-3, more than doubled Michigan’s offensive total yardage, 377 to 184, and collected 22 first downs to the Wolverines’ 12 but had trouble scoring TD’s and settle for four field goals in regulation by placekicker Justin Myer, a third-stringer.

Unfortunately, Myer missed on his fifth field goal try from 37 yards out on the opening possession of overtime.

GAME NOTES:

*The Virginia Tech Hokies under Frank Beamer at 11-3 did not win a conference championship. They lost twice to Clemson by a combined 48 points, including a 38-10 humiliation in the ACC title game.

*In BCS games, the Hokies are 1-5.

*The Hokies strong pass rush created 38 sacks in 2011.

*Virginia Tech relied on their 12th-ranked defense to control games.

*Michigan’s are 12th in the nation in rushing with 235.7 yards a game, and QB Denard Robinson (96.9-yard average) and RB Fitzgerald Toussaint (91.9) were the big-time playmakers.

*Michigan head coach Brady Hoke turned around Ball State, San Diego State and now Michigan and earned the 2011 Big Ten Coach of the Year honors.

*The Wolverines’ BCS record is 2-3.

* Denard Robinson ended the year with some impressive totals: rushed for 1,163 yards and passed for 2,056 yards and accounted for 34 touchdowns overall.

Northland High School grad Trey Burke has been playing quite well as a true freshman for #20 Michigan.

In Tuesday night’s win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the Columbus, Ohio native scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half as the Wolverines used an early 19-point run to a 63-50 win.

Burke, added six rebounds and seven assists and was 3 of 5 from three-point land.

The 8-2 Wolverines received 16 points from Evan Smotrycz.

The Golden Lions, who received 23 points from Lazabian Jackson, fall to 1-6.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff is on sort of a long road trip like the Blue Brothers, as their first home game isn’t until January 14.

OHIO STATE AT MICHIGAN GAMEDAY: Buckeyes hang tough but can’t overcome Robinson, Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN — Coming into Saturday’s rivalry game between Ohio State and Michigan, most fans and media felt that the Wolverines would run away with game considering the Buckeyes troubles on offense and their injury-riddled defense which has had troubles stopping teams at times this season.

But against Michigan, the Buckeyes had very little trouble moving the ball. They totaled 372 total offensive yards, 137 on the ground and 235 through the air and were 3-for-3 in the red zone.

But the Wolverines were slightly better as they finally ended OSU’s 7-game winning streak in the series with a 40-34 win. The game was one of the most exciting in the series. Most of the games have been blowouts by Ohio State.

The OSU defense could not contain Wolverine QB Denard Robinson who accounted for 5 touchdowns, was 14 of 17 passing for 167 yards and at one point in the game completed 11 straight passes. He ran 26 times for 170 yards with 2 TD’s and lost a fumble.

In this game, the Buckeyes did not have Terrelle Pryor and Jim Tressel and Michigan’s quarterback was better than OSU’s signal-caller for a change. That was the difference.

Michigan’s offense was unstoppable at times. They totaled 444 total yards, 277 on the ground, 167 passing and were 4-for-4 in the red zone.

This game was coming-out party of sorts for Buckeyes’ freshman quarterback Braxton Miller. He showed improvement in his passing. Yes, he did miss on some deep balls, but he was 14 for 25 for 235 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 interception. On the ground, Miller rushed 16 times for 100 yards and scored a touchdown.

After the game rumors started heating up that Urban Meyer is set to become the next coach at Ohio State and that there would be a team meeting on Sunday night around 9 pm.

Michigan beat Ferris State, 59-33. A 24-3 run in the 2nd half iced the game. Burke had a typical game for a freshman as he learns the college game: 18 minutes of play, 1-7 from the field, 0-4 from 3-point land, 1-2 on free throws, 4 rebounds and 3 points.

Burke, was the Dispatch All-Metro Player of the year last season.
