The women’s hockey program at Clarkson University in rural Potsdam, New York has put the school in the national spotlight.

The Golden Knights have ended Minnesota’s two-year reign as NCAA hockey champions with a 5-4 win on Sunday in Hamden, Connecticut.

Clarkson, who ends the season at 31-5-5, is the first hockey team other than Minnesota, Wisconsin or Minnesota-Duluth to win the women’s national title.

#1-ranked Minnesota ends the season at 38-2-1 and had their 26-game winning streak snapped.

Shannon MacAulay scored on a breakaway down the ice in the third period with 4:16 to go for the game-winner. MacAulay also scored on a backhanded shot earlier in the contest. All told, she had two goals, two assists for Clarkson.

Members of the ECAC since 2003, Clarkson has a unique situation with Matt and Shannon Desrosiers serving as co-coaches.

Despite critics and no wins, Danica Patrick gets ready for second NASCAR season

Danica Patrick (megasportsnews.com)

Danica Patrick stands out at the racetrack. As a woman, she always has since beginning racing go-karts at age 10 in 1992.

She hasn’t won very much since driving on the IndyCar and NASCAR circuit.

2014 is upon us and the 31-year-old Patrick, a native of Wisconsin, is beginning her second season driving on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit.

This week she is preparing for the famous Daytona 500

In 2013, she became the first woman to win the Daytona 500 pole and finished a very respectable eighth.

That finish was the highest of her rookie season for Stewart-Haas Racing. She averaged finishing 26th for the season and was 27th in points.

No one ever expects her to win a Sprint Cup race, especially the legendary Richard Petty.
