Strong first period leads Dallas over Columbus, 4-2

COLUMBUS, OHIO — The Dallas Stars are fighting for a playoff spot and if they have the lead going into the third period, the law of averages favors them.

The Stars are 16-0-0 when leading after two periods, which ties them for first in the league. The last time they have lost a game in regulation when leading into the third period, was on October 31, 2009. From that point forward, they are 57-0-5.

Thursday night at Nationwide Arena, the Blue Jackets discovered why the Stars are so good in protecting a lead as the visitors prevailed, 4-2.

The Stars went up 3-0 21 minutes into the game, but the Blue Jackets scored two power-play goals and then had several chances to get the tying goal in the final period but couldn’t get the puck passed Kari Lehtonen who had 26 saves.

Jamie Benn scored two goals, Stephane Robidas had a goal and an assist, and Mike Robeiro added two assists for the Stars who badly need points every game because they are 12th in the Western Conference but only two points behind 8th place Minnesota for the final playoff spot.

Columbus, who has looked more like a real team under interim coach Todd Richards, scored twice in the second period, both on power plays. Vinny Prospal and Rick Nash scored, while Fedor Tyutin and Derick Brassard garnered two assists each.

It was a tough night for two players, defenseman Marc Methot left the game with a broken jaw and right winger Jared Boll broke his foot.

GAME NOTES:

NHL announces Flyers-Rangers to play in Winter Classic

Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia is usually quiet and empty in the winter months. But this winter there will be hockey.

The NHL has announced that the Philadelphia Flyers will play host to the New York Rangers in the annual Winter Classic on January 2 in the home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The 45,000-seat stadium is the setting for the fifth-year of the classic.

The game is not held on its traditional January 1 date because it will conflict with the final week of the NFL’s regular season.

The National Hockey League will kick off its regular season with a national television doubleheader featuring the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins.

The Bruins will host the rival Philadelphia Flyers in the first of two games on the NBC Sports Network, formerly Versus on October 6, and the Pittsburgh Penguins will visit Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks in the nightcap.

NBC’s first game will be November 25, the day after Thanksgiving, when Boston plays host to the Detroit Red Wings.

The network will air the Winter Classic on January 2 as the New York Rangers play at Philadelphia.

NBC Sports Group and the NHL are getting ready to enter the first year of a 10-season deal reportedly worth $2 billion.

The Bruins’ Stanley Cup-clinching win against the Canucks in June earned a 4.8 rating, the NHL’s highest-rated game in 37 years.
