Virginia Commonwealth University is a member of the NCAA Mid-major conference, Colonial Athletic Association.

The CAA is often disrepected by the national media, but it is a solid conference with VCU, Old Dominion, Northeastern, George Mason, Delaware, Drexel, Georgia State, Hofstra, James Madison, North Carolina-Wilmington and William & Mary.

The 11th-seeded team Rams used a suffocating defense to corral the taller and stronger USC Trojans in winning 59-46. The Rams up their record to 24-11.

Jamie Skeen scored 16 points to lead VCU into a showdown against sixth-seeded Georgetown (21-10) on Friday in Chicago.

Jio Fontan scored 14 points and Nikola Vucevic 11 for USC (19-15), which managed only one field goal over the final 9 minutes of the game.

The Rams shut down Vucevic, a first-team All-Pac-10 performer, was double and triple-teammed and never got into a rhythm.

The halftime score was 22-22.

In the 2nd half, the Rams found their shooting shoes to go up 34-27. USC came backĀ  to 44-43 but VCU pulled away never to give up the lead ever again.

Shaka Smart, the VCU coach was making a return to UD Arena. He used to be on the staff of the Dayton Flyers under Oliver Purnell as the head of basketball operations in the last decade.

Kirsten Flower (osu)

Upper Arlington native and Ohio State senior Kirsten Flower garnered All-Big Ten honors, becoming the first Buckeye to be named to the all-conference team in consecutive years since Monica Rincon did so from 2000-02.

Flower finished the 2010 regular season with 21 singles victories, playing exclusively at the number 1 spot in the spring. She compiled an 18-8 dual season record, including a 6-4 conference mark.

The senior was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week in February after leading the Buckeyes to wins over Kentucky, Virginia and William & Mary, who were all ranked at the time.

Flower’s father, Jim, also was an All-Big Ten selection at Ohio State. They are believed to be the only father-daughter duo to earn all-conference honors in Big Ten tennis.
