For the past two months, the Columbus Blue Jackets have been in every game and have played playoff-style hockey which this town has been waiting for since the last playoff berth four years ago.

But on Sunday night in a key matchup versus Minnesota, they lacked energy and it cost them dearly.

The Wild used their energy to score two power-play goals in a 3-0 shutout before a dazed crowd of 15,909 at Nationwide Arena.

The loss ended the Blue Jackets’ 12-game home points streak (9-0-3), which is a franchise record.

The loss also hurt their playoff chances. The CBJ remain four points behind Detroit for the eighth playoff spot in the West and only nine games remaining in the season.

Columbus never really tested Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom with only 24 shots on goal.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME

* RYAN SUTER, WILD Defenseman, played 31 minutes and scored a goal

*  NIKLAS BACKSTROM, WILD Goaltender, encountered an easy night facing just 24 shots

NHL hands down suspension to Blue Jackets’ Wisniewski

The National Hockey League is still in the preseason phase of the year, but already there have been suspensions handed down.

Columbus defenseman James Wisniewski and Minnesota winger Brad Staubitz have been suspended indefinitely after Saturday’s game for some chippy play during the Wild’s 4-3 overtime win.

Wisniewski received a minor penalty for an illegal check to the head of Cal Clutterbuck in the third period.

Staubitz was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct after checking Cody Bass from behind in the third period.

The NHL’s department of player safety, headed by former player Brendan Shanahan will have a hearing and review on these issues.

Blue Jackets rally past winless Minnesota Wild in shootout, 3-2

The star of last night’s Columbus Blue Jackets game was the play of Nikita Filatov.

Filatov scored in regulation and the shootout to help rally the Blue Jackets to a 3-2 preseason victory over winless Minnesota on Tuesday night in Columbus.

David Leneveu stopped the last two Wild shooters in the shootout to preserve the win.

Columbus, now 2-3 during preseason, trailed 2-0 but got pulled even on Nick Holden’s shot from the point which went through traffic midway through the third period. Filatov scored on a power-play goal from the left circle earlier in the third period.

Other Blue Jackets stars in the win include Kristian Huselius who scored in the shootout, Anton Stralman registered two assists in regulation. Goaltender Mathieu Garon played the first 30 minutes, allowing one goal on 15 shots.

The Wild fall to 0-3-2 in the preseason, received goals from Matt Cullen and Eric Nystrom in the second period. Niklas Backstrom went the entire game in goal, stopping 31 shots.
