COLLEGE WORLD SERIES: Game 2, South Carolina 2 UCLA 1 in 11; Gamecocks win first baseball title

compiled from NCAA, South Carolina and UCLA news

The South Carolina Gamecocks will go down in the history books for closing out 61-year-old Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska winning its first baseball title with a brand of come-from-behind baseabll.

The Columbia, South Carolina school provided the stadium with the perfect send-off. The stadium has been home to college baseball’s biggest stage since 1950. The 2-1 2 in 11 innings over UCLA on Tuesday night was a classic for the ages.

In 2011, the College World Series will move to a new stadium in downtown Omaha next year.

The Gamecocks, 54-16 trailed in the middle innings of all three of its NCAA regional games and had to win two one-run games in the super regionals to make it to the College World Series.

Once they arrived in Omaha, the Gamecocks lost their first game and had to hold-off elimination four times to reach the finals, even winning one game after being down to their very last strike.

In the end to a fantastic season, South Carolina came from behind again Tuesday night, tying the game in the eighth inning and beating UCLA (51-17) in the 11th on Whit Merrifield’s RBI single.

The Gamecocks won six straight games after losing their CWS opener against Oklahoma, and became the third first-time champion since 2006 after sweeping the best-of-three series.

This was the fifth championship decided in an extra-inning final, and first since Southern California topped Florida State by a 2-1 score in 15 innings in 1970.

Jackie Bradley, Jr., was named the CWS Most Outstanding Player.

Matt Price, 5-1 was the winner allowing one hit over 2-2-3 innings for South Carolina, who also went to the College World Series in 1975, 1977 and 2002, but ended up with no title.

Dan Klein, 6-1 took the loss for UCLA after working 3-1-3 innings.
