OHSAA Boys Tournament: Walnut Ridge wins at Westerville South, 46-39

The Walnut Ridge Scots went into a tough environment at Westerville South and came away with a 46-39 win.

In a low-scoring contest, the Scots lead 18-17 at the half.

Walnut Ridge took control in the third and fourth quarters scoring 11 and 17 points respectively.

The Scots (13-8) were led by Rob Wheelwright with 16 points and Dymiere Finch with 14 points.

The Wildcats end the season at 16-8.

Doubleheader today on HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE: 11:00 am, Northland vs. Reynoldsburg; 3:00 pm, Walnut Ridge plays Olentangy Liberty

HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE will be busy today as we broadcast two games from the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum.

At 11:00 am, the Northland Vikings take on the Reynoldsburg Raiders in one District final while the Walnut Ridge Scots play the Olentangy Liberty Patriots in the other final at 3:oo pm.

The Vikings, six-time defending champions of the Columbus City League, brings a 22-1 record into the game, having beaten Central Crossing, Columbus West and Zanesville in the Marysville region.

The Raiders, of the Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division, bring a 12-9 record into the contest having won two OHSAA playoff games over Olentangy Orange and Hilliard Davidson also in the Marysville region.

This afternoon at 3:00 pm, the Olentangy Liberty Patriots will take on the Walnut Ridge Scots.

The Patriots from Powell, Ohio, play in the Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division where they were the champions.

Liberty has only lost to Westerville Central, 49-46 and Westerville South, 58-57 and are 20-2 on the season.

Columbus City League runner-ups, the Walnut Ridge Scots are 21-1 on the season, the only blemish being a loss to the Northland Vikings in the City League championship game.

The City League South Division champion Scots have advanced to the District finals by beating Whetstone and two other Ohio Capital Conference schools in Worthington Kilbourne and Mount Vernon.

The Tuesday night edition of HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE has Brookhaven (7-3, 5-1) at Columbus (O.) East High Tigers (5-6, 3-3)

LIVE on our website at 7 pm, pre-game is 1o minutes ahead.

This will be the first time that the Bearcats have been on the megasportsnews.com airwaves.

Brookhaven under head coach Hali Robinson, have beaten  Centennial, Westerville South, Whetstone, Mifflin, Linden, Friendship of D.C., and Beechcroft. They’ve lost to Pickerington Central, Berlin Hiland and Northland.

The East Tigers under the dean of City League head coaches, Bob White, are an improved 5-6, 3-3 in the North Division. The Tigers have beaten: Independence, Linden, Whetstone, Granville and Mifflin. They’ve lost to Centennial, Gahanna, Covington Catholic of Kentucky, Beechcroft, Northland and Watterson.

East has lost 3 games in a row and have not won since our HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE contest vs. Mifflin on January 6.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS:Colerain running back Williams leads South to All-Star game win

Cincinnati Colerain running back Tyler Williams is only 5 feet 7 and 155 pounds, but he can be the difference maker in any football game.

He showed his talents at the annual Ohio North-South All-Star Game at Ohio Stadium last weekend. Williams took direct snaps out of the wildcat formation and ran for two touchdowns in leading the South team to a 25-7 win.

Williams, who’ll be playing for the Akron Zips next season, was selected as the MVP as the South won for the second straight year, but still trails in the series 38-25-3.

Other stars of the game include, Westerville South running back Jayshon Jackson who led all rushers in the game gaining 115 yards on 13 carries, had a 25-yard TD run and a two-point conversion pass. Jackson was the South’s offensive MVP.

Massillon receiver Devin Smith, who is headed to Ohio State, caught three receptions for a 68-yard touchdown catch.

Defensive MVP for the South was Hunter Maynard of Bishop Watterson who will be a Bowling Green Falcons player next year.

The top two teams in Ohio Division I play will be hooking horns at Value City Arena in the state semifinals.

The Bulldogs, from the Cleveland, Ohio suburb of Garfield Heights, last reached the state semifinals 61 years ago when gams was 18 cents a gallon and stamps were 3 cents.

They advanced to Columbus by beating the Mentor Cardinals, 85-68 in the regional finals at Cleveland State University. Their top players are Trey Lewis, co-Ohio Player of the Year, Mike McQueen and Tony Farmer.

The Northland Vikings from the Columbus City League, are looking for their second state title in the last three years. They’re led by 2011 Ohio Mr. Basketball, Trey Burke. Also leading the way is, Devon Scott, Jalen Robinson, Jordon Potts and Kechaun Lewis.

The Vikings reached the state semifinals by beating Westerville South, 80-62 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum in the regional final.

The Bulldogs only loss was to Strongsville, 86-79 while Northland’s lone loss was to Lakewood St. Edward, 84-81.
