Improving Kent State is 6-1 after win over Western Michigan


The Kent State Golden Flashes have made strides in just a season and a half under former Ohio State Associate head coach Darrell Hazell.

Kent State is 6-1, 4-0 in the Mid-American Conference after a 41-24 win over Western Michigan.

The Broncos dropped to 3-5, 1-3 in the MAC.

Leading the way was Traylon Durham rushed for 124 yards for the host Golden Flashes.

Wright State recruit Davis signed and in school

One of the newest recruits for the Wright State basketball team during the off-season, has been 6’7 freshman Steven Davis from Indianapolis Manual High School.

Davis verbally committed to the Raiders in August but nothing had been announced in the media of his signing and he was not included in the basketball section of the website or in basketball publications around the country.

Head coach Billy Donlon said through news reports that he has signed his letter of intent and is taking classes and a member of the team for this season.

Donlon will use Davis all over the floor in multiple positions.

* Coach Donlon has moved Director of basketball operations Brendan Mullins down on the floor to assistant coach to take the place of Clayton Bates, who left to go to Western Michigan a few days ago.

Purdue gives Hope two-year contract extension

Purdue University has extended the contract of head football coach Danny Hope for two more years through December 2016.

Under Hope the Boilermakers are 15-31 in three seasons, but has pulled some upsets over the Big Ten’s top echelon teams including Ohio State in two of the past three years.

In 2009, his first year, the Boilers were 5-7. In an injury-plagued 2010, the team was 4-8.

In 2011, Purdue struggled out of the gate with losses to Rice and Notre Dame. But finished at 6-6 and returned to a bowl game for the first time in four years.

They played in the Little Caesars Bowl in Detroit against Western Michigan of the Mid-American Conference.

The former Motor City Bowl, now named the Little Caesars Bowl, will pit Western Michigan (7-5) of the Mid-American Conference against the Purdue Boilermakers (6-6) of the Big Ten Conference at Ford Field this afternoon (Dec. 27) at 4:30 pm in Detroit, Michigan.

Purdue will be making its first bowl appearance since 2007 and its second in a row to the Motor City. The Boilermakers beat Central Michigan in the bowl when it was the Motor City Bowl.

Western Michigan, while be playing a bowl game in its home state for the first time and fifth bowl game overall.

The Broncos will be getting their pro-ready QB returning from missing the season-finale against Akron because of a shoulder injury.

Carder has passed for 400 yards or more four times in 2011, and the offense operates at a high-level and fast-paced. The Broncos are third in the Mid-American Conference in total offense at 456.2 yards a game.

Western Michigan has the most dangerous passing attack in the MAC, as Carder leads the league with over 312 yards a game and a MAC-high 28 touchdown passes. He is able to throw to three top notch receivers, with the leader being Jordan White, who leads the college football in receptions (127), yards (1,646) and touchdowns (16).

Purdue’s secondary is very experienced has given opposing QB’s trouble all season.


*Purdue DT Kawann Short, led the team in tackles for a loss (17 1/2) and sacks (6 1/2) while earning team defensive MVP honors.

*Boilermakers KR Raheem Mostert, is a talented freshman who is dangerous everytime he touches the ball. Averages 31 yards per kick return with a high of 81 against Indiana in the season finale.

*WMU QB Alex Carder is a great passer and runner.

*Broncos WR Jordan White was a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist who holds school records for career receiving yards, receptions and 100-yard games.

*WMU DT Drew Novak, was named the MAC defensive player of the year after collecting 83 tackles, including 20 for losses with 8.5 sacks.

Toledo 66 Western Michigan 63 in record-setting MAC football game

The Toledo Rockets lost their last game 63-60 to Northern Illinois but they turned the tables on Western Michigan Tuesday night in a 66-63 no-defense affair in Mid-American Conference action.

The two teams combined for conference records in points (129), touchdowns (18) and total yards (1,439).

The Rockets’ Adonis Thomas rushed for 216 yards, two rushing touchdowns and 1 receiving score at the Glass Bowl in Toledo.

Broncos quarterback Alex Carder threw for 548 yards and seven touchdowns.

Toledo is 6-4, 5-1 in the MAC West, while Western Michigan is 5-5, 3-3 in the MAC West.
