MLB NL DIVISIONAL SERIES: Two surprising teams, Arizona, Milwaukee vie for league championship

 

When the 2011 baseball season started, most experts in the media selected San Francisco and Colorado to win the West Division and Cincinnati and St. Louis in the Central.

When the dust settled, 162 games later, Arizona and Milwaukee won their respective divisions.

Arizona dethroned the defending champion and World Series winners, the San Francisco Giants, with a record of 94-67, finishing 8.5 games ahead of Frisco.

The Brewers with a record of 96-66, finished 6 games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals and a whopping 17 ahead of the dethroned defesnding champions, the Cincinnati Reds.

Miami volleyball pick second in Mid-American Conference poll

The Miami University women’s volleyball team has been picked to finish second in the MAC East Division.

Ohio was selected to win the East and Northern Illinois the West.

The RedHawks are led by senior middle hitter Cassie Farrell who has been picked to the All-MAC preseason East Division team.

Dragons’ Corcino, D’Anna, Smith play in Midwest League All-Star Game

The Dayton Dragons were well represented at the Midwest League All-Star Game in Davenport, Iowa.

Pitchers Josh Smith, Daniel Corcino and first baseman Dominic D’Anna played for the East Division All-Stars.

The East All-Stars lost to the West, 8-3. Nino Leyja of Burlington hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and the West scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a commanding lead and eventually the win.

Smith was the starting pitcher for the East Division team and pitched one inning, throwing a perfect first inning while striking out two batters.

Corcino pitched the fourth inning and allowed a solo home run to Wisconsin’s Chris Dennis which was the first run of the game. Corcino allowed two hits and was charged with the loss.

D’Anna entered the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the eighth inning and flied out to left field in his only at bat of the game.

Clippers win streak reaches a rare Baker’s dozen

 

The Columbus Clippers win streak has reached the lucky number of 13 or a Baker’s dozen in an 8-2 win over the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday night. The Hometown Heroes are an IL-best 21-5 overall and have a 5-game lead over Louisville in the West Division.

The Clippers offense came up big in the win. Columbus scored 8 runs in the ball game with the big number coming in the top of the seventh when the Clippers put up a five in that inning. The run support was all Clippers righthanders Zach McAllister, who in his longest outing of the year, went eight innings giving up only two runs, all earned, on seven hits while striking out five and walking one. He is now 5-0 on the season.

The losing pitcher was Charlotte righthander Freddy Dolsi who drops to 0-3.

The Clippers went an unbelievable 8-0 on the road trip.

Ohio Bobcats picked to repeat as MAC basketball champions

The media that covers the Mid-American Conference has picked the Ohio University men’s basketball team to win its second straight conference championship.

The Bobcats were the surprise team of the MAC tournament last year after playing inconsistent for most of the season. They were seeded ninth before the tourney started.

They went on to upset Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Kent State was selected to finish second behind Ohio in the MAC East Division. Ball State is the team to beat in the MAC West Division.

The MAC preseason team was selected as well at the annual basketball media day in Cleveland. Ohio Bobcats sophomore guard D.J. Cooper, Lancaster, Ohio native and Akron Zips senior forward Bret McKnight and Buckeye Valley graduate and Bowling Green junior forward Scott Thomas were the most notable players selected to the team.
