Aaron Mullins and South now a contender in the City League South Division (Chris Leaper photo)
The South Bulldogs would love to be champions of the City League division that bears its name.
The Bulldogs, under head coach Ramon Spears, a former assistant of the Bates brothers Michael at Africentric and Jason at Walnut Ridge, have made strides in just three years.
South has gone from one win all the way to 13 wins and currently third in the City South behind Eastmoor Academy and Africentric after Friday night’s 60-50 win over Walnut Ridge.
The key to the game was the Scots only scoring five points in the second quarter. Single-digit quarters have hampered the Scots all year.
Christopher Byrd and Aaron Mullins led the Bulldogs with 14 and 12 points respectively.
Rob Wheelwright led the Scots with 15.
South is 13-5, 7-5 while the Scots drop to 10-8, 6-6 good for fifth place in a division that they’ve dominated the past two years.

Coming into this week, the East High Tigers felt really good about themselves having won three in a row over Briggs, Walnut Ridge and Linden to even their record at 5-5.
With the win on Tuesday over Linden, still looming was Mifflin on Friday and Watterson on Saturday.
The Tigers had a complete meltdown in the fourth quarter against a pressing, fast-breaking Mifflin team and lost 82-78 on Megasportsnews.com’s HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE.
Then comes Saturday and a meeting with tough Central Catholic League power, Bishop Watterson.
The result was a disappointing week when they felt they could win all three if not two of the games.
Bryan Jackson led the Eagles with a season-high 26 points and 11 rebounds for host Watterson who improves to 7-1 after the 57-32 win over East.
The Tigers dropped two games under .500 at 5-7.
Watterson led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter. But East closed to within 22-16 at the half. The Eagles took total control in the 3rd quarter with a 15-8 run to move the score to 37-24 and the rout was on.
