Walker Cup won by Britain & Ireland

Britain and Ireland regained the Walker Cup from the United States for the first time since 2003, knocking off the Americans in the afternoon singles for a 14-12 win in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Walker Cup, run by the USGA and R & A, is a biennial event contested in the odd years between the U.S., Great Britain and Ireland.

The event is in honor of George Herbert Walker, grandfather and namesake of former United States president George H.W. Bush.

The next three events have been scheduled. In 2013, the tournament will be in Southampton, New York; 2015 in Lytham St. Anne’s Lancaster, England and 2017 in Los Angeles, California.

The hosts needed 13.5 points to win the title and took an insurmountable lead after17-year-old Welshman Rhys Pugh won his singles match against U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft 2 1nd 1 and Steven Brown halved with Blayne Barber.

COLUMBUS, OHIO — The Ohio State University Scarlet Course will be hosting the Children’s Hospital Invitational, Thursday July 22-25. The Ohio State Golf Club is located at 3605 Tremont Road in Columbus. It is a par 71 with 7,455 yards.

The total purse is $800,000 with the champion getting $144,000.

Meg Mallon (LPGA)

The favorites for the tournament will be Tommy Gainey, Chris Kirk, Kevin Chappell, Jamie Lovemark and Bobby Gates.

The honorary chairman for the tournament is former Buckeye and LPGA legend Meg Mallon.

A native of Birmingham, Michigan near Detroit, Mallon was a four-time letter winner at Ohio State from 1982-1985 and a two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection in 1984 and 1985. She helped lead the Buckeyes to three Big Ten titles in 1983, 1984 and 1985. She was voted into the Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.

Mallon turned professional in 1986 and has won 18 LPGA Tour tournaments with more than nine million in career earnings, including four major championships: 1991 LPGA Championship, 1991 and 2004 U.S. Women’s Open Championships and the 2000 du Maurier Classic.

Mallon has played as a member of eight U.S. Solheim Cup teams and in 2009 was Assistant Captain for the victorious U.S. squad.

The 46-year-old Mallon has returned to competitive golf this season after suffering through years of  physical challenges and emotional family stress. She is the youngest of six children.

Mallon joins Jack Nicklaus, John Cook and retired Ohio State Men’s Golf Coach Jim Brown as tournament honoree.

The Children’s Invitational tournament for the fourth year in a row has invited several top college players to play and it’s been well received, says Kip McBride, tournament director.

The college golfers are selected from the College Golf Coaches Association teams.

There are 11 in the field of 144, including 2009 Walker Cup member, Nathan Smith.

In 2008, Daniel Summerhays, a junior at Brigham Young, would up winning the tournament as an amateur, the first time that has happened in the history of the Nationwide tour.

In 2009, Rickie Fowler, currently a PGA Tour rookie, lost in a playoff to Derek Lamely on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State. Fowler was still an amateur at Oklahoma State.
