LPGA adds 4 tournaments for 2012

Commissioner Mike Whan (courtesy of LPGA Tour)

The LPGA Tour, like all professional sporting leagues, have been hurt somewhat by the up-and-down economy, seems to be on the rebound in 2012 with the addition of four tournaments, three in the USA.

Commissioner Mike Whan deleivered a schedule of 27 tournaments worth $47 million, 36.8 million in euros in prize money.

Also improving in the schedule will be the elimination of long droughts.

In 2011, the LPGA Tour went three weeks between the Kraft Nabisco Championship until its next event. This season, even with all of the travel over the globe to 12 countries, the tour will not go more than two weeks in between events.

Returning the LPGA schedule will be two popular events in Ohio and Virginia.

The Jamie Farr Toledo Classic, which was not played a year ago due to the Inverness course also hosting the Senior U.S. Open. Also returning is the Kingsmill Resort tournament in Williamsburg, Virginia. It has not been on the schedule since 2009.

With the season-opening Women’s Australian Open, there are tournaments in Hawaii and Canada.

The Women’s British Open, was moved back a month due to the London Olympics. It’ll be held at Royal Liverpool on September 13-16.

Commissioner Whan said the only tournament lost from the schedule is the State Farm Classic in Illinois.

Truck racing at Daytona International Speedway usually has many wild wrecks and Friday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck race, the NextEra Energy Resources 250 was no exeption to the rule.

Rookie John King was the winner in Victory Lane after the race ended, but not without some drama.

King’s truck ran into leader Johnny Sauter in the second of three attempts at a green-white-checkered finish and later was held on to win the wild Truck Series opener.

The win was King’s first NASCAR victory in eight tries and just the third in his career in any race. He previously won a late-model race on a dirt track and a late-model stock car race, both in his native Virginia.

The 23-year-old drives the #7 Red Horse Racing truck.

Timothy Peters finished second, giving the Red Horse Racing team a 1-2 finish in the first race of 2012.

Justin Lofton was third, followed by Travis Kvapil, Jason White and Todd Bodine.

The race took 2 hours, 17 minutes, 13 seconds, with an average speed of 119.169 mph, with 9 caution flags for 37 laps, there were 11 lead changes involving 8 drivers.
