Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez has been named American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 15th.

This is Martinez’s fourth career A.L. Player of the Week honor, and his first since 2005, when he was playing for the Cleveland Indians.

Martinez will be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.

In five games during his big week, Martinez batted an A.L. leading .579 (11-for 19) with four doubles, two home runs, four walks and 11 RBI’s. Victor is carrying a season-high 13-game hitting streak and is hitting .468 (22-for-47) with 10 runs scored, six doubles, two homers and 15 RBI’s during the streak.

Martinez led Detroit to a seven-game winning streak, including a 5-0 record during the week.

Martinez is among the Major League leaders in several offensive categories during his huge week: in RBI and on-base percentage (.652), tied for second in hits and doubles and finished third in slugging percentage (1,105).

Carlos Santana leads Indians over Nationals

compiled from staff and wire reports

Carlos Santana, who has been compared to former Indians star, Victor Martinez because both are Hispanic, switch-hitters and catchers has started a new era in Cleveland.

Carlos Santana (MiLB)

The rookie homered and drove in three runs in his second major league game enabling the Indians to beat the Washington Nationals, 7-1. That victory gives the Indians a four-game winning streak.

The 24-year-old phenom had a 2-run double in a four-run 2nd inning that put Cleveland up 5-0. His teammates gave him both balls from his double and home run and he said they’ll go to his mother.

The winning pitcher was Fausto Carmona who evens his record at 5-5. He faced only 28 batters in the game, one over the minimum and threw 22 of 28 first pitch strikes. He was aided by two double plays.

Masterson shuts down Boston offense and wins for the second straight start

compiled from staff and wire reports

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson received a couple of nice gifts on Wednesday evening: a shutout over his former team and an eight-run eighth inning.

Masterson beat his former team with a two-hitter and Travis Hafner hit a grand slam in the Indians 11-0 rout of the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night. He blanked a very potent lineup which leads the American League in scoring.

Hafner’s 10th career slam, first since May 7,2007, turned a tight game into a rout. Boston relievers Boof Bonser and Joe Nelson combined to throw 60 pitches to 14 batters, walking five and allowing seven hits in the eighth.

It was the first complete-game shutout by an Indians pitcher against Boston since Jack McDowell on April 15, 1996.

Masterson (2-5) faced the Red Sox for the first time and earned his second straight win after a long stretch of losing decisions. He struck out six, walked two and allowed a pair of singles to Victor Martinez in the third and J.D. Drew in the fifth.

Clay Buchholz was the loser, he’s now 8-4.

The right-handed Masterson was 0-11 over 17 starts from August 25 until beating the Chicago White Sox on June 4.

Masterson was traded from Boston to Cleveland with two minor league pitchers for Victor Martinez, just before the 2009 mid-season trade deadline.

Dice-K tough on Indians in 4-1 win

compiled from staff and wire reports

The Cleveland Indians felt that they could beat Daisuke Matsuzaka last night if they could make him throw alot of pitches, get the lead early and get him out of the way and not have to face Boston’s top-notch back end of the bullpen which is good even without closer Jonathan Papelbon who is the bereavement list.

That plan never got off the ground for the Tribe. Dice-K threw eight scoreless innings, matching the longest start of the season, threw 112 pitches, 70 for strikes. He struck out five, walked two and allowed four hits.

The Red Sox beat Cleveland last night at Progressive Field 4-1. Austin Kearns prevented the Indians from being shutout for a sixth time, by blasting a home run leading off the ninth inning.

The Red Sox have been a hot team recently. They are 30-16 since April 20 and 23-11 since May 3 and the hottest team in baseball along with Cincinnati.

Boston catcher Victor Martinez received a very warm round of applause from the crowd of 14, 758 when he came to the plate in the first inning. This was the first trip back to Cleveland since he was traded on July 31, 2009. Says Martinez, “Cleveland was great for me and my family. I really appreciated that ovation”.
