Virginia Commonwealth hangs onto Coach Smart

Shaka Smart has shown that he is one of the hottest, coveted young coaches in college basketball. But his name did not start to circulate until VCU’s recent run through the NCAA Torunament ended in the Final Four. His name came up when several schools were looking for a basketball coach. But he’s staying put in Richmond, Virginia.

Virginia Commonwealth University is pleased to be keeping Smart. The school says that he has agreed to a new eight-year contract.

Smart, in his second-year after replacing Anthony Grant, who left for the Alabama job, led the Rams to the “First Four” Games in the NCAA Tournament to upsets of powerhouse programs including Georgetown, Purdue and Kansas to reach the Final Four.

VCU became only the third number 11 seeded team to advance that far in the tournament, losing to Butler 70-62 in the national semifinal on Saturday.

Smart has a record of 55-21 at VCU and will celebrate his 34th birthday on Friday, April 8.

Virginia Commonwealth University is a member of the NCAA Mid-major conference, Colonial Athletic Association.

The CAA is often disrepected by the national media, but it is a solid conference with VCU, Old Dominion, Northeastern, George Mason, Delaware, Drexel, Georgia State, Hofstra, James Madison, North Carolina-Wilmington and William & Mary.

The 11th-seeded team Rams used a suffocating defense to corral the taller and stronger USC Trojans in winning 59-46. The Rams up their record to 24-11.

Jamie Skeen scored 16 points to lead VCU into a showdown against sixth-seeded Georgetown (21-10) on Friday in Chicago.

Jio Fontan scored 14 points and Nikola Vucevic 11 for USC (19-15), which managed only one field goal over the final 9 minutes of the game.

The Rams shut down Vucevic, a first-team All-Pac-10 performer, was double and triple-teammed and never got into a rhythm.

The halftime score was 22-22.

In the 2nd half, the Rams found their shooting shoes to go up 34-27. USC came back  to 44-43 but VCU pulled away never to give up the lead ever again.

Shaka Smart, the VCU coach was making a return to UD Arena. He used to be on the staff of the Dayton Flyers under Oliver Purnell as the head of basketball operations in the last decade.
