Thomas Bjorn leads World Cup in Australia by 1 stroke

Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn shot a 3-under-par 68 on Friday to take a one-shot lead after two rounds of the World Cup tournament in Melbourne, Australia.

Bjorn, who is 42, has 20 professional wins to his credit.

He is at 8-under 134 and leads American Kevin Streelman, who posted a 69.

Streelman and Matt Kuchar helped lead the USA lead the team standings over Denmark by three shots.

U.S. Men’s team defeats Germany 4-3 at RFK Stadium

In a game commemorating the 100th anniversary of the United States Soccer Federation, the U.S. Men’s team defeated a second-string Germany team 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium.

Clint Dempsey scored two goals in the second half to lead the Americans. With those two goals, the 30-year-old has scored 36 goals moving him into second place on the U.S. career scoring list.

USA teammate Jozy Altidore scored his first his first international goal in 1 1/2 years.



United States Women’s Soccer beats Canada 3-0

The United States Women’s Soccer Team played an old nemesis on Sunday and came away victorious.

Alex MorganĀ  scored two goals in the 3-0 exhibition win.

It was the first meeting of the two countries since the USA won in overtime, 4-3 in last year’s semifinals of the Olympic women’s soccer tournament.

The 23-year-old Morgan has scored 44 goals in 66 games since 2010 for the US women’s squad.

Landon Donovan missing from USA World Cup team; taking break from soccer

If you’re a diehard United States soccer fan and you’ve noticed that something is missing from the U.S. team which is currently involved in World Cup qualifying. You’re right! A key ingredient is missing.

The missing player is Landon Donovan, who is dangerous every time he touches the ball and usually scores in international competition.

The USA will have to do without him this go round.

The 30-year-old MLS star is taking a much-needed break from soccer after he and his pro team, the Los Angeles Galaxy, won their second straight Major League Soccer title.

Donovan, is a veteran of three World Cups and the U.S. team’s career leader in goals and assists.

Olympic prime-time ratings were up for NBC

NBC’s coverage of the London Olympics saw prime-time viewing finish up by 8% over the Games in Beijing. That increase allowed the London Summer Games the highest-rated staged outside the United States since 1976.

NBC’s overall London coverage drew a total of 219.4 million unique viewers. A unique viewer is if they watch at least six minutes. That broke the record from Beijing and became the USA television event with the most viewers of all-time.
