Bengals re-sign DE Jonathan Fanene

Jonathan Fanene (NFL photo)

The Cincinnati Bengals re-signed one of their own free agents, defensive end Jonathan Fanene to a one-year contract.

The seventh-year player, who was drafted by the Bengals in 2005, has 7 sacks in his NFL career, along with 3 interceptions. However, he was limited to only two games last season due to a hamstring injury.

One Bengals teammate was especially glad to see Fanene back with the team; good friend Domata Peko, who calls him a brother because the two grew up in the same town of Pago Pago, American Samoa.

The 29-year-old Fanene is 6’4, 292-pounds and is a graduate of the University of Utah.

The hiring comes three weeks after Jim Boylen was fired following consecutive losing seasons.

Krystkowiak was an assistant with the Nets for just eight months. The Utah job will be his fourth head-coaching job.

Krystkowiak was fired in 2008 in a season and a half with the Milwaukee Bucks. He has also coached at the University of Montana and for the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League.

Ohio native Meyer resigns from Florida to spend time with family

Urban Meyer (photo by Harrison Diamond of Florida Alligator Independent & Nikonmadness via Wikipedia Commons)

Urban Meyer almost resigned from Florida earlier this year but that lasted just one day and was for health reasons.

This time he is resigning because he wants to be a better husband and father. He has two daughters playing Division I volleyball and wants to see them.

The 46-year-old Toledo, Ohio native leaves coaching with an impressive resume’. He has a 103-23 record, a winning percentage of .817, 64-15 at Florida, a 6-1 Bowl record and two national championships. He rebuilt the football programs at Bowling Green State University in Ohio (17-6 record) and at the University of Utah (22-2 record).

Meyer is walking away from about $20 million in guaranteed salary. But Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley did agree to pay Meyer a $1 million retention bonus the coach would’ve received if he were employed on January 31, 2011.

The Florida Gators struggled during the 2010 season and were near the bottom of the Southeastern Conference in every offensive category and finished at 7-5. Florida will play in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida on January 1, 2011 against the Penn State Nittany Lions who were likewise, 7-5.
