Pat Summitt plans on coaching for a long time eventhough she was diagnosed recently with an early onset of dementia.
In a statement released by the University of Tennessee from Summitt on Tuesday, the Volunteers women’s basketball coach said that she visited with doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, after last season and was diagnosed with early onset dementia-Alzheimer’s type-over the summer months.
The 59-year-old Summitt says that she plans to rely on medication and mental exercises to manage the progressive condition that can destroy cognitive abilities over a period of time.
Summitt also said that her assistant coaches Holly Warlick, Dean Lockwood and Mickie DeMoss will be taking on more responsibilities with the team from this point forward.
A 2000 inductee to the National Basketball Hall of Fame, Summitt has a very impressive coaching record of 1,071 wins-199 losses, a winning percentage of 84.33 percent.
