Despite concerns over knee, Tom Brady plays well in Patriots win over Tampa Bay

Three days ago the concern in Patriots Land was Tom Brady and his knee after a collision during a practice session between the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Friday night in an exhibition game against the same Buccaneers, Brady shook off any effects of the sprained left knee and led the Patriots to a 25-21 win.

Playing the first two series, the former University of Michigan quarterback completed his first 11 passes and threw a touchdown pass to Danny Amendola to the delight of New England fans.

Steelers’ Woodley, several pro celebrities getting involved in PBA

Lamarr Woodley is a linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers but he getting involved into the PBA in the Detroit area.

The 28-year-old graduate of the University of Michigan has joined several new owners by getting involved in the eight-team PBA Professional Bowling League that’ll start in January 2013 in the Detroit suburbs.

Woodley, who grew up in Saginaw, Michigan, bowled as a kid, will be the celebrity owner of the Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits.

Jerome Bettis, former running back of the Steelers, former NFL receiver Terrell Owens and LA Clippers point guard Chris Paul will also be involved in the new venue. The PBA has some of its top pros competing on five-man teams in a team format.

Canton Charge guard Harris named NBADL Performer of the Week


Manny Harris of the Canton Charge has been named NBA Development League Performer of the Week for the week of February 13-19.

The Charge had a good week going 2-0.

This is Harris’ second time he has been named as the NBA D-League Performer of the week this season. He also was named on January 30.

With the award, Harris becomes the first player to be named twice as a winner of the award this season.

Harris, who’s real name is Corperryale L’Adorable Harris, which is a combination of his cousin Corrine, uncle Perry, “ale” is from siblings Janelle, Jerrelle and Al.

The 6’5, 185-pound Harris, a graduate of the University of Michigan, averaged 41.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists while shooting 56 percent from the floor last week.

He had a season-high 46 points in a 136-113 win over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on February 16, before finishing the week with a 36-point performance on February 18 in another win over the Vipers, 135-132.

For the season, Harris is averaging 21.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists for Canton in 17 games.

Comrie retires from NHL due to 3rd hip surgery in five years

Mike Comrie, who scored at least 30 goals in a season, retired from the National Hockey League after having a third hip operation in the past five years.

The 31-year-old former University of Michigan standout retired two weeks after his recent hip surgery.

Due to the injury, he was limited to 127 games the past three years.

He finished his career last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Comrie had just one goal and five assists in 21 games and was an unrestricted free agent when he retired.

The winner of a gold medal for Canada in the 2002 world hockey championship, he is the husband of singer/actress Hilary Duff. The couple is expecting their first child in March.

Comrie played for Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ottawa, the Islanders and Pittsburgh, totaling 589 regular-season games, 168 goals, 197 assists. In 32 career playoff games, he scored four goals with six assists.

Comrie was born in Edmonton and started his NHL career with the Oilers during the 2000-2001 season. The next season, 2001-2002, he scored 33 goals.

NHL announced Detroit, Toronto to play 2013 Winter Classic

The National Hockey League announced on Wednesday that the Detroit Red Wings will play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2013 Winter Classic.

The University of Michigan Board of Regents gave the athletic department permission to let the NHL hold the showcase game at the “Big House” Michigan Stadium.

Michigan Stadium can seat as many as 114, 000 people.
