Guan Tianlang will not play in U.S. Open

The newest golfing phenom, Guan Tianlang, has announced that he will not try to qualify for the United States Open.

The United States Golf Association informed the media that the 14-year-old from China has withdrawn from the sectional qualifier on June 3 in Dallas, Texas.

Guan informed the USGA shortly after he received a sponsor’s exemption to play in the Memorial Tournament, which ends on June 2.

The USGA had offered to move Guan’s qualifier to help with travel logisitics, but the teenager declined the invitation.

 

Tennis exhibition in Columbia has Venus beating Serena

Venus Williams beat her sister Serena Williams 6-4, 7-6 (5) in an exhibition match in Columbia, the first match for both sisters since the United States Open in September.

The Williams sisters will play another exhibition in Milan on December 3 against Italian tennis stars Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta.

The match was the first for Venus since she dropped out of the U.S. Open after the first round due to an immune system disease. Serena has not played since losing in the U.S. Open finals to Samantha Stosur.

In head-to-head matches, Serena leads Venus 13-10, but exhibitions do not count in the total.

Browne bests O’Meara in Toledo event

2005 PGA Tour comeback player of the year Olin Browne earned a three-shot win over Mark O’Meara in the United States Senior Open in Toledo, Ohio.

The 52-year-old Browne’s closed the tourney with an even-par 71 which followed rounds of 64, 69 and 65 and left him at 15-under-par 269.

After a bogey dropped him into a tie with O’Meara (72), he played the last 10 holes in 1 under and O’Meara made two costly bogeys.

Browne, is a graduate of Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. He turned pro in 1984 and has eight pro wins.

Djokovic streak rolls on to 42

The talk of the ATP Tour in 2011 has been Novak Djokovic. His most recent match with big-hitting Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 United States Open champion, was tied a set apiece when play was suspended because of darkness on Friday, faced two break points and saved them, then broke del Potro in the next game in posting a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.

His winning streak has reached 42 straight matches.

PGA Grand Slam event led by David Toms

David Toms opened with a 4-under-par 67 to take a one-shot lead over Ernie Els in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

The four-man event is being played at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda. The tournament is for major champions, but the alternates starred on the first day of play.

Toms is filling in for British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, who currently is recovering from an ankle injury. Els is subbing in for Masters champion Phil Mickelson, who chose not to play.

United States Open champion Graeme McDowell had a 72. PGA champion Martin Kaymer opened with a 74.
