U.S. beats the Netherlands in World Cup of Softball, 2-1

Valerie Arioto hit a tiebreaking home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the United States a 2-1 win over the Netherlands in Oklahoma City in the World Cup of Softball.

The U.S. trailed the game after Nathalie Timmermans homered in the fifth inning for the Dutch (3-1) in a meeting of the only two teams that had yet to lose in the tournament.



Spain to host USA in Davis Cup match in September

Spain will be hosting the United States in one Davis Cup semifinal in the coastal city of Gijon.

The matches will be played on an outdoor red clay court on September 14-16.

The other semifinal match will be played in Buenos Aires between the Czech Republic and Argentina.

USA women’s soccer gets win over Japan


Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan each scored two goals to give the United States women’s team a 4-1 win over Japan in a tuneup for the Summer Olympics.

The match was played in Halmstad, Sweden.

Morgan is 22 years old and one of the youngest members of the team.

The 5’7 forward played for the University of California Bears from 2007-2010.

United States beats Sweden in soccer; Wambach scores 136th goal

Abby Wambach scored the 136th career goal for the United States’ women’s team led the Americans past Sweden 3-1 in Halmstad, Sweden, in a tuneup for the upcoming 2012 London Olympics.

Wambach scored in the eighth minute, Alex Morgan scored in the 22nd minute and Tobin Heath scored in the second half 11 minutes in.

Sweden’s goal was scored in the 35th minute by Lotta Schelin.

Britain-Ireland beat the U.S.; wins Curtis Cup

Britain-Ireland rallied past the United States to win the Curtis Cup in Nairn, Scotland, ending the American’s 16-year domination of the women’s amateur golf competition.

The final outcome means that for the first time, all four major professional and amateur men’s and women’s team golf trophies are held by Britain, Ireland and Europe.

Britain-Ireland beat the Americans 10.5-9.5 despite needing to win five of the eight singles matches over the weekend.
