Revolution midfielder Clyde Simms retires due to kidney disease

Clyde Simms (2008 photo by Ben Stanfield via wikipedia commons)

Clyde Simms was in his prime at just 32 years of age when he retired from Major League Soccer recently.

He had a good reason too. His health!

The former midfielder of the New England Revolution decided to hang up the soccer cleats in early 2014 due to a battle with kidney disease.

Clyde’s disease – Focal Segmental Glomerlo-sclerosis (FSGS) – has now progressed to the point that he needs a kidney transplant.

The usual waiting time for a suitable match is about four years, and many people on the waiting list really don’t have that long before needing to go on dialysis, including Simms.

People interested in donating a kidney first need to contact a donation center and be tested. To be tested to see if you are a match to help Clyde, or any other person waiting for a kidney match, please contact the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Living Donor Program at (617) 643-7193.

Simms is a graduate of East Carolina University. While playing as a Pirate, in 72 games, he scored 7 goals and handed out 7 assists and was the team captain his final three seasons.

In the MLS, he played for D.C. United from 2005-2013 and with the Revolution in 2012 and 2013. He played for the U.S. National Team in 2005.

The 5’9 defensive midfielder was born in Jamestown, North Carolina.

Emilio Renteria scored on a second-half penalty kick allowing the Columbus Crew to tie the Seattle Sounders FC at 1-1 Saturday night at soggy Crew Stadium. The tie also allowed the Crew to move into a second place tie in the Eastern Conference.

Fredy Montero scored in the 7th minute for Seattle.

Montero put the Sounders ahead with a header, an assist from Erik Friberg for his cross from 35 yards to the center of the box. The goal was the fifth off a header this year for Seattle, which leads Major League Soccer in that category.

The Crew (3-1-4) has not lost since the first game, running its unbeaten streak to seven games and it stays undefeated at home (3-0-2). Renteria has scored all four Crew goals in its last three games, and his decisive kick came after Patrick Ianni was whistled for pulling down Chad Marshall on a corner kick by teammate Eddie Gaven.

Half of the Crew’s eight goals this season have come from the penalty shot.
