Brooklyn Nets beat NY Knicks in overtime, 96-89

The Brooklyn Nets, formerly of New Jersey, pulled out an overtime thriller in their new-look rivalry opener with the New York Knicks who are from Manhattan, 96-89.

The win allowed the city rivals to tie for first place.

The game was originally scheduled to be played November 1, but was postponed in the wake of superstorm Sandy.

Wearing uniform #42 that Jackie Robinson made famous in Brooklyn for the Dodgers, Jerry Stackhouse scored the tie-breaking three-point goal with 3:31 left in overtime to help the Nets clinch the game.

Brook Lopez led the Nets with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

The Knicks only had two players in double figures scoring, Carmelo Anthony with 35 points, 13 rebounds and Tyson Chandler with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

NBA FINALS: Dallas stuns Miami to win NBA title, 105-93

Dirk Nowitzki has certainly paid his dues as an NBA Superstar. He only had one more accomplishment to put on his resume and that was a world championship.

His resume is now complete as the Dallas Mavericks avenged their 2006 NBA Finals loss to Miami, by defeating the “Big Three” of Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami, 105-95 on Sunday night in Game 6 to stun all of the so-called experts who didn’t feel thay had a chance against the Heat.

The Mavs did the unthinkable winning two games in Miami and three in a row to close the series out at 4 games to 2.

Nowitzki, who did not have a good shooting night from the floor (9 0f 27) scored 21 points, many in the clutch, was named the Finals MVP.

The most embarrassed and disappointed player was LeBron James, who all but guaranteed a championship last summer when he made “The Decision” live on ESPN last summer to leave Cleveland for Miami. Now is resume’ is still without a championship after eight years in the NBA.

James led Miami with  21 points, Chris Bosh scored 19, Mario Chalmers had 18 and Dwayne Wade chipped in with 17.

Miami had several chances to take control of the game, but wasted every last one. They were 20 of 33 in free throws, allowed the Mavs to score 27 points off turnovers and could not get the key rebounds late in the game.

Jason Terry led the Mavericks with 27 points.

U.S. national basketball team is set; Rondo withdraws suddenly

Head coach Mike Krzyzewski has selected his final 12-man roster for the world championships. They play a final tuneup against Greece on Wednesday before the real games start in Turkey on Saturday.

But the squad will have to play without Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo who asked to withdraw from consideration.

Rajon Rondo (NBA)

Rondo had started the United States first two exhibition games, then to the surprise of all, including team members, he didn’t play at all Sunday when the Americans edged Spain in another game.

The final roster includes: Andre Iguodala, Kevin Durant, Tyson Chandler, Derrick Rose, Kevin Love, Rudy Gay, Stephen Curry, Lamar Odom, Eric Gordon, Chauncey Billups, Russell Westbrook and Danny Granger.
