RedHawks’ Mavunga Co-MAC East Division Player of the Week

Miami University junior forward Julian Mavunga from Indianapolis, Indiana/Brownsburg High School, was selected the Mid-American Conference East Division Co-Player of the Week after helping the RedHawks to two wins while scorching the nets with a sizzling percentage last week.

Mavunga was a dominant force inside and outside in the two Miami wins as he shot a scorching 73.3 percent from the field for the week, including 66.7 from 3-point range. He averaged 16.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg while dishing out five assists and blocking four shots.

In the 76-57 win over the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals, Mavunga led all scorers with 17 points in 29 minutes of playing time and was 7-of-8 from the floor.

Mavunga and teammate Orlando Williams led all scorers in a thrilling 80-73 come-from-behind win against Troy last Saturday with 16 points. He grabbed nine rebounds in 39 minutes of play against the Trojans. The junior helped lead a 9-0 run to put the game away.

Mavunga shares the weekly East Division honor with Buffalo’s Byron Mulkey. This is the first player of the week award for a RedHawk this season and second of his career.

OHSAA FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: Pickerington Central beats Troy

Top-seeded Pickerington Central beat the Troy Trojans Saturday night, 24-8.

The Tigers were led by Notre Dame recruit Eilar Hardy who has had an injury-filled season. His sprained right ankle caused him to miss two games and play sparingly in a couple of others.


Hardy scored on offense, a 37-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and on defense, a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The Tigers move to 10-0 while Troy ends the season at 8-3.

FIU wins Sun Belt; Wittels hitting streak moves to 54 games in a row

The Florida International University baseball team (36-23) defeated the Troy Trojans, 14-10, to claim its first Sun Belt Conference Tournament title since 1999, the Golden Panthers first season as a member of the SBC. The Golden Panthers set Sun Belt Conference records in hits, runs scored and batting average for the entire championship, en route to a berth in the NCAA  Tournament.

Garrett Wittels (FIU)

Jeremy Patton, Pablo Bermudez and Garrett Wittels were named to the Sun Belt All-Tournament team while Patton was also named Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament.

With a single in the championship game, FIU infielder Garrett Wittels extending his hitting streak to 54 games on the season.

Wittels is now four shy of tying Robin Ventura’s NCAA Division I record of 58 games set in 1987. Three players in Division I and Major League Baseball have accomplished such a feat, with the third being Yankee great and Hall of Famer, Joe DiMaggio who hit in 56-straight games in 1941.
