Cavs dominate Pacers, 90-76; fighting Knicks & Hawks for 8th spot in Eastern Conference playoffs

There was a time when everybody said the Cleveland Cavaliers could not win without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving.

That statement has been proven wrong as peaking Cavs have won four of the past five games without Irving.

In the meantime, other players are stepping up. Dion Waiters, Luol Deng, Jarrett Jack, Tristan Thompson and Spencer Hawes have chipped in to lead the young team.

On Sunday afternoon, Cleveland dominated the East’s best team, the Indiana Pacers, 90-76.

Walters scored 19 points, Deng knocked down 15 and Thompson controlled the boards with 16 rebounds to help in chasing down the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Cavs, who are 14-12 since February 5, might be getting Irving back into action this week as they play at Orlando on Wednesday, at  Atlanta on Friday and host Charlotte on Saturday. The Hawks are injured and sputtering having lost six in a row.

Cleveland ended a nine-game losing streak to the Pacers.

Cavs use fourth quarter rally to beat Magic, 91-85

The Cleveland Cavaliers rallied behind the play of Alonzo Gee and Tristan Thompson to beat the Orlando Magic on Sunday night, 91-85.

Gee scored 19 points to lead the host Cavaliers in a fourth quarter rally that overcame the Magic.

Thompson scored 15 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.

Cleveland, who ended a season-high 10-game losing streak on Friday at Boston, has now won two games in a row for the first time since February 26-27.

The Cavs trailed by seven points in the third quarter and took the lead for good early in the fourth and made clutch play after clutch play down the stretch.

The two players who have injected new life into the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson, have been noticed by everybody around the NBA.

The two rookies have been selected by NBA assistant coaches to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star weekend on February 24.

In the past years, rookies have faced each other in an East-West game.

This year, they’ll be a new twist, Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal will each draft a nine-man team.

Cavs playing decent basketball right now

The young Cleveland Cavaliers are playing well early in the season before they go through a seven-game, 13-day road trip.

Recently, the Cavs beat the Charlotte Bobcats, 115-110 to improve to 3-2 overall. It’s the first time that Cleveland has been over the .500 mark since November 9, 2010.

Rookie point guard Kyrie Irving tied a career-high with 20 points for the Cavs and had no turnovers in 22 minutes.

Fellow rookie, forward Tristan Thompson collected career highs in points with 16 and nine rebounds.

D.J. Augustin led the Bobcats with 26 points and nine assists. Corey Meggette had 21 points and eight rebounds.

Columbus native and former Ohio State player Byron Mullens, finally get a real shot at playing time with Charlotte after being traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder, set career highs with 14 points. It was his third straight game in double figures.
