New Jersey power play and Martin Brodeur too much for the CBJ

compiled by the staff

Martin Brodeur, goaltender for the New Jersey Devils, seems to be setting records and breaking records every game he plays. He’s also making it difficult for his own records to be broken in the years to come.

Brodeur made 19 saves Tuesday night in New Jersey’s 6-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The victory gave him a 40-win season for thee eighth time. No other National Hockey League goalies have had more than three seasons.

His next milestone that he is after, 600 wins. The NHL career leader in victories is only three away from that mark. Earlier in the year, Brodeur supassed Terry Sawchuk as the league’s shutout king. Broduer has 108 shutouts.

The Devils gave Brodeur plenty of offense against Columbus as their mostly-dormant power play woke up and produced their first three goals. Travis Zajac and Zach Parise each scored twice and Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and three assists in helping the Devils jump over Pittsburgh and into first place in the Atlantic Division. New Jersey and Pittsburgh both have 90 points, but New Jersey have won one more win than the Penguins and have played one fewer game.

* It was a showdown between Martin Brodeur and Steve Mason, who grew up idolizing the Devils goaltender.

* A pair of Devils defensemen reached games played milestones: Bryce Salvador 600 and Andy Greene 200.

* Columbus became the last team to visit the Prudential Center.

* The Devils are 6-2-2 vs. the Blue Jackets.
