NHL announces 2014 Winter Classic: Detroit & Toronto

The National Hockey League has announced that the Winter Classic outdoor game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs will be held on January 1, 2014 at Michigan Stadium.

The game was scheduled for this past New Year’s Day but was canceled due to the NHL lockout.

Maple Leafs give Joffrey Lupul contract extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs have given 29-year-old forward Joffrey Lupul a five-year contract extension which will run through the 2017-18 season.

Lupul signed a 5 year, 26.25 million dollar contract extension.

Lupul played in 66 games last season and ranked second on the team in goals with 25, assists 42 and points 67.

Lupul, whose NHL career started in 2003, has played with Philadelphia, Edmonton and Anaheim prior to being with Toronto.

Lupul was the first player to score a playoff hat-trick in Anaheim franchise history.

NHL announced Detroit, Toronto to play 2013 Winter Classic

The National Hockey League announced on Wednesday that the Detroit Red Wings will play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2013 Winter Classic.

The University of Michigan Board of Regents gave the athletic department permission to let the NHL hold the showcase game at the “Big House” Michigan Stadium.

Michigan Stadium can seat as many as 114, 000 people.

Ex-hockey star Wilson dead at 82

Former hockey star, Johnny Wilson, who was a Stanley Cup champion four times with the Detroit Red Wings, has died. He was 82.

Wilson, who was seen very frequently at Red Wings home games, died in the Motor City after battling lung disease and colon cancer for several years.

Wilson helped Detroit win the Stanley Cup in 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955.

The famed left winger, who played from 1949-1962 in the NHL with Detroit, Toronto, Chicago and the New York Rangers, scored 161 goals and notched 171 assists in 688 games.

The native of Kincardine, Ontario, Canada was an NHL coach for seven seasons with Los Angeles, Detroit, Colorado and Pittsburgh.

His nephew is current Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson.

Flyers welcome back Pronger

The Philadelphia Flyers captain and defenseman Chris Pronger returned the team’s lineup last night in a 2-1 shootout loss to Tampa Bay.

The 6’6, 220-pound star who missed the previous six games after being struck in the right eye by the stick of Mikhail Grabovski of the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 24.

The 37-year-old Pronger has played for the Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks.

In 1154 games, he has scored 156 goals, compiled 530 assists and 686 points.
