The New York Yankees have announced that right-handed pitcher Ivan Nova has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.

This type of injury generally requires Tommy John surgery.

Nova left Saturday’s game against Tampa Bay in the fifth inning.

The 27-year-old Nova has a career record of 40-21 with and ERA of 4.04 and 393 strikeouts.

Twins’ Zamaya faced with decision to rehab again or retire after latest injury

The Minnesota Twins took a big gamble in the offseason by signing reliever Joel Zamaya to a one-year, incentive-laden contract with the thoughts he could help improve their bullpen.

But after a live batting practice session on Saturday which lasted just 13 pitches, Zamaya left the mound feeling pain in his elbow.

The reliever was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right elbow on Sunday. The recent scenario means that the 27-year-old Zamaya, once of MLB’s top flame-throwing relievers, will have to make a decision to retire or have Tommy John surgery and go on another long, extensive rehabilitation regimen for a year or two.

Saturday’s stint on the mound was the first time Zamaya had pitched since June of 2010 after breaking his elbow while pitching in a game for the Detroit Tigers at Minnesota.
