PENN STATE AT OHIO STATE GAMEWEEK: Buckeyes try to rebound against Nittany Lions

The Ohio State Buckeyes are looking to rebound this afternoon at home against the Penn State Nittany Lions.

The Buckeyes lost last week in overtime against the Purdue Boilermakers in West Lafayette, 26-23.

The Bucks could’ve won the game in regulation, but the extra point was blocked.

With that loss, OSU is an unheard of 1-3 on the road this season. During Jim Tressel’s tenure as a coach, they lost only three road games.

Today at 3:30 p.m., the Buckeyes will be hosting Penn State who is 8-2, 5-1 and the #1 team in the Leaders Division. OSU leads the series 13-12 and won 38-14 last year in Columbus.

The Nittany Lions are trying rebound themselves from a loss to Nebraska, 17-14, and the loss of their long-time head coach Joe Paterno.

Penn State, before a couple of weeks ago, was one of the cleanest programs in college football. But then the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse accusations started, and the media-blitz of bad press has followed since. Those accusations on Sandusky have resulted in the president, Paterno, the athletic director and the Business manager who ran the campus police all being ousted.

Penn State has a storied program with 826 all-time wins (5th in nation), 43 Bowl Games (8th in nation), 27 Bowl Wins (3rd in nation), 95 1st Team All-America Selections.

The Nittany Lions are now coached by defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, who is in his 33rd season at his alma mater.

Special teams might play into this game.

Penn State on kickoff returns is led by Chaz Powell and has ran one back for a TD. Punt returner Justin Brown is steady and catches all balls.

The placekicking/punter duties belong to Anthony Fera who averages 42.1 yards a punt and is 12 of 15 on field goals. He is 1 for 4 from 40 yards or more.

Ohio State’s KOR and PR is led by the explosive Jordan Hall.

46 years, 409 wins, 24 bowl victories, Penn State immediately fires Paterno for failures in Sandusky child sex-abuse case

Thursday was quite a day at normally quiet Penn State University.

Longtime head football coach Joe Paterno announced his retirement at the end of the season. It was a surprise but not a shock for most of the nation. His long and distinguised career coming to an end because of his failure to do more in about the allegations of child sex abuse against his famous former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Since Sandusky’s arrest last Saturday, Paterno had been under siege by criticism across the country for not contacting police eventhough he had told his boss, athletic director Tim Curley about what he had learned.

The 84-year-old Paterno had decided earlier in the day to retire after his 46th season at Penn State rather than let the school’s board of trustees decide his fate. “Joe Pa” for all he has done at Penn State and the college football word, leaves the school in disgrace all because of a man he thought was his friend, Sandusky.

Paterno told his players and coaching staff first about his decision to retire. It was the right thing to do after the university and football program began taking hits after the Sandusky arrest over the weekend.

Then, the school’s board of trustees were told by the chairman that they had to make a clean-sweep of everybody involved in the scandal.

Late last night Paterno and school president Graham Spanier were both fired immediately for their roles in the Sandusky scandal. Paterno was replaced by defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, as the interim head coach for the final three regular season games; at home Saturday with Nebraska and road contests at Ohio State and Wisconsin. Spanier was replaced on an interim basis by Rodney Erickson.

The board, led by vice chairman John Surma, said that the university’s reputation had to be put first and not the athletic programs.
