DUBLIN, O. — The first round of the Memorial Tournament is in the books and the leader is not Tiger Woods, but he’s only six shots behind the leader.
Woods shot a 1-under 71. He has opened the Memorial with a round at par-or-better in 13 of his 14 years in playing Muirfield Village. The only other time that Woods opened the tournament in this Columbus, Ohio suburb, with a 71 was in 2000 and he won.

The 37-year-old Woods, the defending champion, made five birdies and four bogeys.
Woods is six shots behind first round leader Charl Schwartzel who was brilliant with a 7-under-par 65, one shot ahead of Scott Piercy.
Woods was not pleased with his performance on Thursday. He hit 11 of 14 fairways, including all seven on the back nine, but struggled with other parts of his game. He needed 30 putts after hitting 13 greens in regulation. He even acknowledged that 53-year-old Fred Couples, who plays regularly on the Champions Tour played better than he did.
Couples, who likes playing with Woods, carded a 2-under-par 70 and is tied for 13th.

Rory McIlroy (Megasportsnews.com photo)
Northern Ireland golf star Rory McIlroy has not had the start to the PGA Tour season that would suit his taste.
In three tournaments, the 23-year-old fan favorite, missed the cut in Abu Dhabi, lost in the first round of the Match Play Championship and in a bizarre twist on Friday, withdrew from the Honda Classic after 26 holes.
Conflicting stories from the tournament said that McIlroy, the world’s top-ranked golfer, mentally was not ready to play golf or he had a tooth ache.
But the fact is, he walked off the course in the middle of the second round at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
McIlroy was a stunning 7-over-par through eight holes when his second shot went into the water on the 18th hole. He gave his golf club to his caddy, shook hands with his playing partners, turned in the scorecard and walked to the parking lot.
An hour later, his management company issued a statement saying McIlroy was bothered by a sore wisdom tooth.

In other news from the classic, Luke Guthrie shot a 7-under 63 to take a one-shot lead at the halfway point. Guthrie, a University of Illinois product, is at 9-under 131 after two rounds, ahead of Michael Thompson who is second after shooting a 65 on Saturday.
Tiger Woods is nine shots off the lead after shooting his second straight 70 and barely made the cut with a late charge.
Camilo Villegas, the first-round leader, shot a 77 and missed the cut.
