Team Ohio has pair of wins in Italy

Team Ohio basketball coached by Thomas Worthington head coach Bob Miller, won a couple of games in Rho, Italy, in the U-17 international girls basketball tournament on Friday.

Pickerington North star Brittany Johnson led the way in an 86-34 win in game one over Omegna Pallauaulo. Johnson scored 10 points and 11 rebounds.

In an 89-46 win in game two against San Carlo, Johnson again led the way with 19 points. Olentangy Liberty’s Maddie Redwine scored 17 and Africentric’s CC Harley scored 14.

NCAA Division III second round: Wooster 92 Capital 79

 

Justin Hallowell

Thomas Worthington product Justin Hallowell scored 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Wooster Fighting Scots over the Capital Crusaders, 92-79 in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Hallowell, a forward, is 6’7, 210-pounds and a senior.

Wooster, now 26-4, will play Illinois Wesleyan (21-7) this coming Friday.

Michael Sommer led Capital (19-10) with 15 points.

Walnut Ridge at Briggs, huge City South battle tonight on HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE at 7 pm

Tonight’s HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE will be in the Columbus City League South Division and it’ll be a huge game.

The Walnut Ridge Scots (7-0, 4-0) will travel to Briggs (6-2, 3-0). Game time is 7 pm, pre-game at 6:40 right here on the website. LISTEN LIVE by clicking here.

The Scots defeated arch-rival Eastmoor Academy on Friday and Briggs beat Independence so both teams come in with momentum.

Walnut Ridge under Jason Bates has also defeated Thomas Worthington, South, Independence, West, Pickerington North and Dublin Scioto.

The Bruins of Briggs are coached by Tony Rice, who is the school’s all-time points and assists leader, has beaten Franklin Heights, Groveport, Olentangy, West, South and Independence.

Wickcliffe’s free throws lead Wooster to Division III Championship Game

Bryan Wickcliffe, a Columbus St. Charles graduate, canned two free throws with 50.3 seconds left to give the Wooster Fighting Scots a 73-71 win over Williams College of Massachusetts in an NCAA Division III tournament semifinal in Salem, Virginia.

The Scots came back from a 17-point deficit in the second half to win the game. They closed the game with a 27-8 run.

Ian Franks scored 24 points and Thomas Worthington product scored 18 for 31-2 Wooster.

The Scots will matchup with St. Thomas (Minn.), a 59-57 winner over Middlebury of Vermont.

Northland’s Sullinger will retire after season ends

James “Satch” Sullinger announced recently that he would be retiring at the end of the season to spend more time with his family.

The 61-year-old former Oberlin College basketball star, has coached at several levels of competition since 1978.

He will continue to teach until 2014.

Sullinger caoched two of his sons, Julian and Jared. Some Columbus area fans might not recall, but his oldest son, J.J. played at Thomas Worthington before going to Arkansas and transferring back to Ohio State.

A native of Columbus, Sullinger has a record of 255-137 in coaching stops at East, Beechcroft, Reynoldsburg, Northland. When his alma mater came calling, he was Oberlin’s head coach for three seasons.

The past five seasons, Northland has posted a 116-5 record. The Vikings won the 2009 Division I championship. Last season, he and son, Jared, were named James A. Naismith national coach and player of the year respectively.

This season, Northland has a 21-1 record and a #2 seed in the Central District.
