Columbus Crew beats Ohio State in the annual Connor Senn Memorial Game, 4-0

The Columbus Crew defeated the defending Big Ten champion Ohio State men’s soccer team, 4-0, Tuesday night in the ninth annual Connor Senn Memorial Game at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus before 1,507 fans.

With the money being raised from ticket sales and silent auction items, the Connor Senn Memorial Fund surpassed the $170,000 mark after nine years and is now a fully-endowed scholarship at the Ohio State University. Some of the big ticket items from the auction Tuesday were Ohio State football tickets, Evan Turner autographed photos and weekend stays at area hotels.

Jason Garey led the Crew scoring assault on the field. The Crew, who is undefeated in Major League Soccer play through four games, with four goals on the night. For the Buckeyes, Konrad Warzycha, the son of Crew head coach Robert Warzycha, registered three of the team’s five shots on the day, while goalkeepers Matt Lampson and Ryan Dalton combined for nine saves.

The game started off with what looked to be an even match with the teams swapping possession for much of the first 15 minutes. The Crew, however, were the first to score. Garey opened the scoring in the 16th minute off of a cross from forward Emilio Renteria, sending the ball into the lower right 90 off a diving shot along the left side of the goal box.

Garey, a Maryland alum, continued the scoring with the second goal for the Crew unassisted in the 30th minute. The Crew were too fast to pounce on the defensive brakedown by the Buckeyes and scored again quickly in the 31st minute. Forward Sergio Herrera connected on a pass from Renteria with his scored assist for the night.

The Crew upped their lead during the 73rd minute when Renteria, with his third assist, placed the ball at the feet of Garey, who shot the ball into the back left of the net for his third goal on the night.

Although the Crew won the game 4-0, both teams will say the score of the match does not matter. The true victory of the Connor Senn Memorial game is keeping alive the memory of the former Buckeye who passed away playing the game he loved, soccer!

Crew back in action against Real Salt Lake Saturday night at home

After a bye week off from MLS play last weekend, The Crew returns to the field Saturday April 24 when it hosts defending MLS Cup-champion Real Salt Lake, in a showdown between the last two MLS Cup champs at Crew Stadium and rematch of the clubs 2009 playoff series.

Saturday’s match is set to start at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Real Salt Lake, which currently sits in sixth place in the Western Conference with a 1-2-1 record (4 pts), enters the match after falling to the LA Galaxy, 2-1 last Saturday April 17, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

The Crew, which sits in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a 1-01 record (4 pts), enters Saturday’s match well rested after the bye week. However, the team did host a pair of college teams in scrimmages at Crew Stadium last weekend. The beat Duquesne, 5-0  and lost to Louisville 1-0.

Crew opens ‘First Kick 2010′ by shutting out arch-rival Toronto FC, 2-0

Columbus, Ohio– The last three seasons, the Columbus Crew have started their home schedule off with a game against their arch-rival, Toronto FC in a battle for the Trillium Cup.

The home-and-home Trillium Cup competition between the two clubs, refers to the official flower of the province of Ontario and official wildflower of the State of Ohio, is awarded annually to the winner of the season series between the geographic rivals. The Crew, who have won the Cup in its first two years, 2008 and 2009, is unbeaten against Toronto FC since the club’s inception in 2007, compiling a record of 4-0-5 in nine games against the Reds.

Saturday’s game was played during perfect weather conditions for late March, sunny, breezy and 51 degrees before 13, 356 fans at 11-year-old Crew Stadium. The Crew sent everybody home happy with a win over Toronto FC, 2-0.

The Crew went ahead in the 29th minute. Andy Iro was 7 yards in front of the goal when he received a free kick from Guillermo Barros Schelotto that was started from the right sideline. Iro headed the ball toward the left post and the ball bounced once before crossing the goal line.

The Crew added an insurance goal in the 87th minute when Schelotto put the ball into and open net after goalkeeper Stefan Frei collided with Crew defender Danny O’Rourke on the edge of the penalty area. Toronto defender Nick Garcia tried to clear the ball out of the area, but it went to Schelotto for an uncontested shot.

With the win, Columbus is now 5-0-5 overall against Toronto and 4-0-2 at Crew Stadium.

* Toronto FC announced before the game that they had signed defender Dan Gargan.  Gargan was signed after spending much of the pre-season with the team.  As per team and league rules, financial details were not released.

Gargan, 27, was drafted in the 3rd Round (43rd overall) by the Colorado Rapids in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft.  The following season he was awarded the “Rapids Most Improved Player”.  He made a total of 49 appearances for the Rapids before moving on to Chivas USA in April of 2008. Shortly after, he retired from the game citing personal reasons but resurfaced in the USL First Division with the Puerto Rico Islanders in 2009.  With the Islanders he finished with 12 appearances and one goal.

Gargan arrived in Columbus in time for the game.

Columbus Crew loses to FC Dallas in Exhibition game

Saturday evening in Frisco, Texas, The Crew and FC Dallas played a game in the Pioneer Cup Series, which is a tribute in the memory of Lamar Hunt. The first Pioneer Cup was played in Pizza Hut Park in 2007 with Columbus winning 3-0.

Not last night however. Dallas received goals from David Ferreira in the 16th minute and one from Atiba Harris in the 34th minute to win 2-1.

The Crew scored when Andy Iro put one into the back of the net in the 62nd minute. He was assisted by Emilio Renteria and Gino Padula.


The Crew announced recently, the signing of 23-year-old defender Shaun Francis to a developmental contract.

Francis was selected by the Crew in the fourth round (#63 overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft after a three-year career at Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.). While at Lindsey Wilson, Francis totaled 61 appearances, while scoring seven goals with nine assists. During his senior season, he captained the Blue Raiders to the 2009 NAIA National Championship, while tallying three goals and four assists. He was also named to the Mid-South Conference First Team in 2008.

Francis, as a native of Jamaica, he will occupy one of the club’s international player spots.
