David Lighty leads Buckeyes to 11th win scoring 29 points

David Lighty has been at Ohio State so long, it seems as he has been there the entire decade.

Just kidding, he is in his fifth year with the basketball team and he goes about his business of playing and leading by example without a lot of fanfare.

Against North Carolina Asheville the other night, it was his turn to lead the Buckeyes to a win.

Lighty scored 29 points, and made seven three-point baskets in helping the 2nd-ranked Buckeyes to a 96-49 win.

His 29 points were a season high and one shy of his career high last season against Cleveland State.

William Buford had 14 points and Deshaun Thomas scored 13 for Ohio State. Jared Sullinger did not need to score 30 this game, but did pull down 16 rebounds.

Asheville was led in scoring by J.P. Pimm with 15 points. UNCA drops to 5-6 on the season.

The 11-0 Buckeyes tied their best start in 20 years with the win. The team won their first 11 games in 2005-2006, Thad Matta’s second season as head coach. There is only one Ohio State team with a better start, the 1990-91 team won their first 17 games.

Buckeyes’ Diebler scorches Florida Gulf Coast with school record-tying nine three-point goals

Florida Gulf Coast from Fort Myers, Florida is a relatively new school which most basketball fans haven’t heard of. Established in 1991 by then-Governor Lawton Chiles, is a public university with 11,115 students, nicknamed the Eagles and are a Division I team.

They provided the opposition for the Ohio State Buckeyes a few days ago and they stayed in the game by employing a zone defense that caused the home team to miss 14 of its first 18 shots.

Led by the senior from Upper Sandusky, Jon Diebler, the Buckeyes began to heat up and led his team to an 83-55 rout of Florida Gulf Coast in Value City Arena.

After missing his first two shots, Diebler tied a school record by making nine three-point baskets and scored a career-high 29 points to lead the #2 Buckeyes to a 9-0 record.

The nine threes tied the record set by Jay Burson in a 1988 win over Florida in the ECAC Holiday Festival in New York. It was a Value City Arena record.

Diebler and Burson can’t seem to shake each other. The two are high-scoring guards from the state of Ohio, were high school stars, both went to Ohio State and Diebler broke Burson’s Ohio high school record for career points in 2007.

William Buford scored 17 points and became the 47th player in school history to score 1,000 points in his career, joining Diebler and David Lighty. That gives Ohio State three 1,000-point scorers on the floor at the same time.

The 9-0 start matches Ohio State’s second-best since the 1990-91 season, when they won their first 17 games. OSU started 11-0 in 2005-06 and 9-0 in 2008-2009 under Thad Matta.

The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles fall to 2-6 and were led in scoring by Chase Fieler scored 12 points.

The Buckeyes, trailing by one point in the second half, which saw 11 lead changes in the first eight minutes, the 4th-ranked team in the nation outscored the number 9 Florida Gators 37-18 in the final 12:09 of the game and cruised to a 93-75 win at the O’Donnell Center.

Freshman Jared Sullinger, who has adjusted nicely to college basketball, earned his second straight double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Fifth-year senior David Lighty, who is 2-2 against the Gators in his career, also scored 26 points to lead the 2-0 Buckeyes. William Buford added 16 points, eight assists and three steals.

The Buckeyes forced the Gators into 11 second-half turnovers; several of which helped the Ohio state turn a four-point lead into an 18 point advantage with 3:30 left in the game.

Florida (1-1) was led by guard Kenny Boynton who had 21 points.

The current freshman class on the Ohio State basketball have been playing well at least in one exhibition game and one regular season game, but nonetheless, they’re fitting in.

Against North Carolina A&T, the number 4-ranked Buckeyes showed the fans the talent that coach Thad Matta has brought in.

DeShaun Thomas scored 24 points, Jared Sullinger added 19 and point guard Aaron Craft provided a spark in a game-clinching run in the 102-61 rout at in Value City Arena.

Sullinger also had 14 rebounds to go with his 19 points. His double-double was the first by an Ohio State freshman in his first game since 1977, when Herb Williams had 34 points and 10 rebounds against California-Hayward.

Senior Dallas Lauderdale also had a double-double, the first of his career with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. He tied a career-high with eight blocked shots.

The Aggies played without their shot-blocking center, 6-foot-9 Thomas Coleman, who has been out of action with a hamstring injury. Without him in the middle, NC A&T was outrebounded 60-22 and the Buckeyes took advantage with 34 second-chance points.

The Ohio State men’s basketball team got their season underway with a 102-56 thrashing of Walsh College in Value City Arena.

Walsh, from Canton, Ohio may not be able to play with Ohio State, Ohio and West Virginia, the three teams that they’re playing in exhibition games, but things teams will help them in preparation for their NAIA schedule. Walsh College is a powerhouse in basketball on the NAIA level year-in and year-out.

The game saw the Buckeyes use 6 freshman with the four remaining starters and the only negative part of the game that concerned Thad Matta, OSU’s coach is the defensive end of the court.

Walsh shot 46 percent from the field in the first half. Ohio State made adjustments and held them to 26 percent in the second half.

The freshman played well. Jared Sullinger, sporting his brother JJ’s old number 0 jersey, scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Aaron Craft had 12 points and eight assists. Craft played point guard whenever William Buford was not on the floor.

The veterans held up their end of the bargain as well. David Lighty scored 19, William Buford 16 and Dallas Lauderdale 12. The Buckeyes shot the ball well against the shorter Cavaliers of Walsh, 60 percent.

The Buckeyes open the season officially on Friday night against North Carolina A&T.
