The Meineke Car Care Bowl in Houston on December 31 pits two teams with 6-6 records, Texas A&M and Northwestern.

The Aggies have fired head coach Mike Sherman due to the team falling shy of high expectations.

Tim DeRuyter, the team’s defensive coordinator, has been given the ship to run until after the game on New Year’s Eve. The Aggies lost four of five games to end the season.

Northwestern had a bad streak of their own in the middle of the season, losing to Army, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa and Penn State before winning four of the last five games to get bowl eligible.

The Wildcats are in the postseason for a program-record fourth season in a row. The fifth-year seniors on the team have 36 wins in their careers, the best ever for a five year group at the Chicago area school. But it has been since January 1, 1949, that Northwestern has ended the season with a bowl win. They won the Rose Bowl that year.

The Wildcats are led by QB Dan Persa, who completed 74.2% of his passes in their ball-control, horizontal passing offense.

Texas A&M’s QB is Ryan Tanneyhill who was 12th in the nation in passing and he threw 28 touchdown passes to talented receivers Ryan Swope and Jeff Fuller.

The 2011 Advocare Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana, will pit a pair of 7-5 teams against each other.

The Missouri Tigers of the Big 12 Conference against the North Carolina Tar Heels of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The 2010 game had Air Force playing Georgia Tech. The Falcons beat the Yellow Jackets, 17-14.

The Tar Heels are playing in its fourth consecutive bowl game, the school’s longest streak since a five-game run from 1979-1983.

North Carolina is coming into the game on a down note, having only won a single game against Duke after becoming bowl eligible with their sixth win on October 29.

If the Tar Heels win the game, their achieve their fourth straight eight-win season.

The Tigers of Missouri won four of their last five games after starting off a disappointing 3-4. Missouri beat Texas for the first time in head coach Gary Pinkel’s tenure, 17-5.

Shreveport, Louisiana is not a stranger for Missouri. The Tigers are playing there for the third time since 2005 due to the fact that the Big 12 had eight-bowl eligible teams for the league’s seven bowl games. Missouri was pushed out of the top seven spots despite the fact it earned wins over Iowa State, Texas and Texas A&M.

Missouri’s offense is led by QB James Franklin, a sophomore, who completed 63% of his attempts with only 10 interceptions. During the season, he had an interception-free streak of 123 in a row.

The Tar Heels offense is led by  WR Dwight Jones who led the ACC in receptions with 79 and was tied for the league lead with 11 touchdown catches with 11. Also on offense is RB Giovani Bernard a big-play runner who averages 5.4 yards per carry and totaled 1,222 yards rushing.
