It has been a long season for the East High Tigers.

But win or lose, they play the game hard and aggressive, but lose games at the end because of a lack of depth, height and just plain talent.

Such was the last Friday night when Beechcroft Cougars provided the opposition in a City League North battle at East High School.

The Cougars with one of the top players in the area in Martise McLaurin, finally pulled away in the second half for a 69-59 win.

The Cougars upped their record to 9-7, 7-5, while East, still looking for their first win since December 18 and first home win of the year, drops to 2-16, 1-11.

Beechcroft used a hot-shooting second quarter, making five 3-point goals to go up at halftime, 40-25. They outscored East 25-9.

The Tigers best quarters were the first and third. The third quarter saw them stay close to the Tigers scoring five 3-point goals to give them a chance entering the fourth quarter down 51-42.

But Beechcroft is one of the top team’s in the North Division and used their depth and shooters to seal the game.

SWIFT TAX SERVICES/ HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE Mifflin Punchers hold off pesky East High Tigers, 69-61

The Mifflin Punchers had their hands full with the East High Tigers Thursday night.

Mifflin needed a very strong fourth quarter to beat East for a second time this season, 69-61.

Earlier in the season at Mifflin, the Punchers held off the Tigers, 76-68.

The City North battle saw Mifflin go to 6-9 overall, 5-6.East drops to 2-15 overall, 1-10.

The East Tigers have two streaks going that they’d like to see go away in the wind. They have not won a game since defeating Linden 51-46 back on December 18 and have not won at home all season.

The game started out with Mifflin taking control early in the first quarter. Behind the play of Ashton Scott, the Punchers raced out to a 19-5 lead. But the Tigers playing good defense and solid rebounding settled down and went on a 12-0 run to end the opening quarter trailing just 19-17, while surviving a five turnover quarter.

In the second quarter, East kept on putting the pressure on Mifflin and had another solid quarter getting contributions from Terry Wilson to support James Davis. Wilson scored five points.

The halftime score was 33-33.

At the end of three quarters, Mifflin led 49-46.

The game was going to be decided in the fourth quarter by Mifflin. Up until then, the Tigers had held high-scoring point guard Percy Dean in check with only 10 points. But head coach Gene Caslin, put the game and ball in the hands of the lightning-quick and sharp-shooting guard Dean and let him take over the game, which he did. He scored 15 points on two, field goals and ten free throws. Everytime he got the ball, East fouled him.

Dean ended up leading Mifflin with 25 points, Ashton Scott scored 14, Jonathan Roberts knocked in 11 and Alex Harris scored 10.

East, who just simply ran out of gas at the end of the game, was led by James Davis with 20, Mycol Madison with 10 points and Carnell Willoughby with 9.

The Players of the Game were Ashton Scott of Mifflin and James Davis of East.

The broadcast team will be back at East High School Friday night (tonight) as the Beechcroft Cougars visit at 7:00 pm.
