Everyone figured that Mark Martin would be on the NASCAR Hall of Fame ballot in his first year of eligibility (2014).

Martin, winner of 96 NASCAR races in all divisions, failed to make the ballot.

The ballot does include Bill Elliott and Terry Labonte, a pair of Cup champions along with Mike Stefanik and Buddy Baker. Engine builder and team owner Robert Yates also was nominated.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame welcomed its most diverse class on Friday night.

Dale Inman became the first crew chief inducted into the hall. He was introduced by Richard Petty, a seven-time NASCAR champion and a member of the first hall class.

Inman was Petty’s crew chief for all eight titles and won an eighth with Terry Labonte.

The third Hall of Fame class also included team owner Glen Wood, three-time NASCAR champions Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarborough and modified driver Richie Evans, who was killed in a 1985 accident at Martinsville Speedway.

Earnhardt on the pole for 2011 Daytona 500

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has had trouble winning races for the past two years, has reclaimed a spot he was accustomed to win he was a winning driver, the pole position.

He captured the pole position for Sunday’s Daytona 500 with a lap of 186.089 mph during qualifying.

The pole is a big boost to Earnhardt’s confidence, because he is coming off a couple of disappointing seasons.

This Daytona 500 will be bittersweet for Junior. It’ll be the 10-year anniversary of his father’s death at the track in 2001. NASCAR has plans to honor his dad throughout the week.

Earnhardt’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jeff Gordon, qualified second. 2011 will be the second straight Daytona 500 front row sweep for Hendrick, who put Mark Martin on the pole and Earnhardt #2 last year.

The rest of the field will be set after two qualifying races on Thursday.

Already assured of spots in the field are Bill Elliott, Travis Kvapil, Joe Nemechek and Terry Labonte.
