The much-rumored trade between the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants involving linebacker Keith Rivers has become a reality.

The Bengals traded the former USC star for a fifth-round draft pick, ending a four-year stint in Cincinnati, on the sidelines frequently with injuries.

Rivers missed all of last season recovering from surgery on his right wrist.

He’s played in only 35 games out of a possible 64 in four seasons.

Cincinnati also agreed to a deal with 33-year-old cornerback Terence Newman, an unrestricted free agent from the Dallas Cowboys.

The Bengals have waived cornerback Rico Murray, who has signed on several ocassions as an emergency player when injuries crop up in the secondary.

Last season, Newman started all 14 games he played and had four picks, including a 43-yard interception-return touchdown.

Newman will be re-united with Mike Zimmer, the Bengals defensive coordinator, who was his coach in Dallas.

Newman will probably be a back-up player and gives the Bengals’ defensive backfield depth with Leon Hall recovering from an Achilles injury.
