As expected, Cincinnati Bengals release WR Antonio Bryant

The Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday released wide receiver Antonio Bryant after signing him to a four-year, $28 million deal back in March feeling that he would make a solid one-two punch with Chad Ochocinco.

Both Bryant and Terrell Owens worked out for the Bengals in March. The Bengals decided to go with Bryant who was younger, but was coming off an inury-filled 2009 season. He had surgery to repair cartilage damage in his left knee last season and caught only 39 passes for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

However, Bryant’s knee began bothering him during the summer and he was able to practice with the team during training camp. So in order to protect themselves, Cincinnati went out and signed Terrell Owens to a one-year deal.

Owens has really bonded with Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer and has been the top receiver during the preseason. Bryant has missed all four of the Bengals previous preseason games due to the fact that the muscles around his knee haven’t been strong enough to allow him to cut and dart at full speed.

The Bengals have one preseason game left this Thursday at Indianapolis.
