Joey Logano on the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Michigan Pure 400 race

Joey Logano had one of the fastest qualifying speeds in NASCAR Sprint Cup history on Friday, capturing the pole for Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 race.

Sunday’s race will be at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

Logano’s speed of 203.949 was the ninth fastest by a pole winner in the circuit’s history and the fastest since Bill Elliott at Talladega, Alabama on April 30, 1987.

The 23-year-old Logano, 2009 Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year, has 2 wins in the series with 52 Top 10 finishes and 6 poles.

NASCAR RACE PREVIEW #10: Talladega Superspeedway, Aaron’s 499 today on FOX-TV, 2:05 p.m. start

Today is Race #10 on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit with a visit to Talladega, Alabama and the Aaron’s 499 at the Talladega Superspeedway.

Talladega is located 100 miles away from Atlanta and Birmingham.

The race was supposed to start at 12:15 p.m., but due to rain, the track needed to be dried out and the start time will be 2:05 p.m. on FOX-TV.

Talladega is NASCAR’s largest track at 2.66 miles and the 500 miles, equates to 188 laps. Seating capacity is 108,000.

The Superspeedway is known for its high speeds and wheel-to-wheel restrictor-plate racing. Wrecks involving multi-cars is very common. If you get penalized hear and fall laps behind, you’ll never catch-up.

RECAPPING THE 2011 AARON’s 499 RACE

 

Jimmie Johnson’s 0.002-second margin of victory over Clint Bowyer matched the closest finish in NASCAR Cup history. Talladega has tandem-racing style and the 2011 race also tied series records with 26 different leaders and a total of 88 lead changes.

Chevrolets took all five spots with 2-5 going to Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer.

The last 10 Cup races at Talladega has Clint Bowyer with 2 wins, Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski one each.

This week NASCAR RACE #9 Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama

This Sunday April 25, is the Aaron’s 499 on Fox-TV at 1 p.m. It’ll take place at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama. Known as “The Big One” and “Dega”, Talladega, Alabama is located on an old abandoned airfield. The city itself is located 50 miles east of Birmingham.

The race track’s seating went from 131,866 to 143,000 after track renovations. It is a Tri-oval with 500 miles being 188 laps.

The oval with the steepest banking in NASCAR (33 degrees in the turns) has long been known for high speeds and wheel-to-wheel, restictor-plate racing, which lead to multiple accidents.

The United States flag which flies above Turn 4 measures 1,800 square feet.

In the 2009 Aaron’s 499, It was one of the wildest finishes ever with Brad Keselowski coming across the hood of race leader Carl Edwards and sent him into the protective fence on the final turn.Keselowski went on to claim his first Cup victory while Edwards walked across the finish line. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finished second.
