Rookie draft choice Justin Meram scored two goals, but the Crew lost to the Houston Dynamo 4-2 in a very-physical, 120-minute exhibition in Phoenix.

Crew forward Andres Mendoza was ejected in the 18th minute, and two Dynamo players were issued red cards.

Before the game, Meram and fellow SuperDraft picks Rich Balchan, Cole Grossman and Bernardo Anor were signed to contracts.

The Crew have returned from Arizona and are preparing for a Champions League quarterfinal against Real Salt Lake on Tuesday, February 22 at Crew Stadium.

Columbus Crew sends another fan favorite packing: Steven Lenhart to San Jose

The Columbus Crew, who have some of the most loyal fans in Major League Soccer, have been testing that loyalty this entire off-season.

Once again, the team has gotten rid of a fan favorite in favor of an untested draft choice.

The Crew on Thursday traded forward Steven Lenhart to the San Diego Earthquakes for a first-round SuperDraft pick and allocation money.

The trade helped the Crew acquire Michigan scorer Justin Meram, a prolific scorer who garnered 12 goals in the Wolverines’ final nine games last season.

The key statement about Meram, is he scored those goals in college for Michigan. On the pro level he’d be lucky if he gets to play more less score 12 goals or touch the ball 12 times.

Lenhart was respected around the league because he is a hard-working, tireless, big-bodied menace who is tall at 6’2 and good around the goal.

San Jose offered the Crew the number 15 pick and allocation money of $75,000.

Columbus Crew trades Jason Garey to Houston

The Columbus Crew recently did some more roster reshuffling by trading the rights to forward Jason Garey to the Houston Dynamo. In exchange, the Crew gets the Dynamo’s 4th round pick in the 2015 SuperDraft.

Garey, who is 26, was selected by the Crew in the first round (#3 overall) of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft.

During his five-season tenure, he started 40 of the 83 games in which he saw action, scoring 15 goals and recorded six assists. He was a member of teams which won two Supporters’ Shields in 2008 and 2009 and an MLS Cup championship in 2008.

Garey arrived in Columbus in 2006, following a stellar career at the University of Maryland, where he won the NCAA Men’s College Cup and the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2005.
