Improving Browns dump Patriots, 34-14

Everybody knew when Mike Holmgren was hired that the Browns could only improve each year. But in the first year?

The Browns improved to 3-5 as they have beaten two teams that they were huge underdogs going into the games. In successive weeks with a bye between them, Cleveland has beaten the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints and on Sunday, the New England Patriots, 34-14.

The Browns rolled up a 10-0 lead early and never looked back.

The Browns dominated all facets of the game including running the football 44 times and passing only 19.

Peyton Hillis continues to be a star running back in-the-making. He had career highs of 29 carries for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

Colt McCoy continues to impress as a rookie quarterback. He scored his first NFL touchdown going 14 for 19 passing for 174 yards and did not commit a turnover for the second game in a row.

Browns upset world champion Saints using gadget plays

The Cleveland Browns, according to media sources, spend a few minutes at practice each week working on gadget plays just in case they need to use them in a game.

In Sunday’s game against New Orleans, the Browns used, not one, but several trick plays.

They include, a 68-yard run by their punter Reggie Holmes, a 62-yard throwback by Joshua Cribbs to Eric Wright on a punt return, a 13-yard pass from running back Peyton Hillis to quarterback Colt McCoy, in upsetting and stunning the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in the Superdome, 30-17.

This is the third straight season that Cleveland has upset a defending Super Bowl champion. In 2008, the New York Giants, 2009, the Pittsburgh Steelers and now the New Orleans Saints.

On defense, the Browns were using all types of fronts and alignments that basically made Saints quarterback Drew Brees look like a rookie. It was one of his worst games in the NFL, throwing four interceptions.

Colt McCoy and the Cleveland offense had an impressive fourth quarter drive that chewed up 7:34 on a 13-play, 50-yard drive.

The 2-5 Browns now go into the bye week having won two of its last three games.

The Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints will get an early test when they host the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL season opener, a rematch of their thrilling NFC title game which was decided in overtime.

The nationally televised game will be Thursday night September 9. New Orleans won its first conference title by beating Minnesota 31-28 on a 40-yard field goal by Garrett Hartley 4:45 into overtime. The Saints went on to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in the Super Bowl.

Also in announcing the 2010 schedule, the NFL has added a little quirk to the schedule.

In an effort to make late-season games more meaningful and to stop teams from sitting out regular players once they have clinched a playoff spot, the NFL has set up all intradivision matchups for the final Sunday January 2, 2011.
