The 78th annual Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, to some folks is an unknown bowl.

Most people don’t realize it is the second-oldest bowl in the nation to the Rose Bowl.

The game takes place at 2 pm ET on CBS-TV and has Georgia Tech (8-4) going up against Utah (7-5).

The Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech ended the season by losing four of its last six games. They ended 2010 in almost the same fashion going 1-5. Tech started the season at 6-0.

Tech has lost six bowl games in a row and their senior captains, Steven Sylvester and Roddy Jones, have not enjoyed a bowl win in their fantastic careers.

Tech was picked to win the ACC’s Coastal Division but ended up tied for second.

The Utah Utes were in contention in the South Division of the Pac-12, but had an upset loss to the lowly Colorado Buffaloes on November 25.

The Utes have a good defense which ranks seventh nationally in rushing defense, allowing 97 yards a game. They rank 18th in points given up at 19.7.

Georgia Tech ranks third nationally in rushing, averaging 316.8 yards a game.  The Yellow Jackets rank 34th in scoring at 34.9 a game.

Andrew Luck decides to stay at Stanford

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck decided to finish his college studies and get his degree in his 20′s rather than wait until after an NFL career where he would have to return to college in his 30′s or even 40′s.

He is passing up the possibility of being the NFL’s #1 pick in the 2011 draft.

Luck ended the suspense of whether he was staying or going before the deadline when underclassmen in college have to declare for the NFL draft.

Luck, who sat out his first season as a redshirt and has two years of eligibility remaining, but is on schedule to graduate next spring.

The Heisman Trophy finalist says he is committed to earning his degree in architectural design and will earn his degree in the spring of 2012.

Luck was the runner-up this football season to Auburn’s Cam Newton for the Heisman Trophy and will be one of the favorites for the 2011 award.

Luck ended the season on a high note, completing 18 of 23 passes for 287 yards and four touchdowns as the 5th-ranked Cardinal defeated #12 Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, 40-12.

Stanford ends the year at 12-1.

Luck is the son of former NFL quarterback Oliver Luck, is one of the reasons Stanford has gone from a one-win also-ran in 2006, to one of the top teams in the country. He has led the Cardinal to a 20-5 record in his 25 career starts, missing only the Sun Bowl last year against Oklahoma because of a broken right index finger. Stanford loss the game to the Sooners.
