The 2009 number 1 overall draft choice put on a remarkable display of power pitching in his major league debut Tuesday night, being clocked at 100 mph with his sizzling fastball baffling hitters and also using nasty curve balls in helping the Nationals to a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The right-handed phenom pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs on Delwyn Young’s homer into the right field seats on a 90 mph changeup. He threw 94 pitches with 65 being strikes.

In comparing MLB pitching debuts, this ranks at the top. Only J.R. Richard of the Houston Astros and Karl Spooner struck out more in the record books dating to 1920; 15 for Richard in 1971 and 15 for Spooner with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. Both had three walks and pitched complete games.

The Washington Nationals got their man once again just like the 2009 MLB draft when they picked Stephen Strasburg.

Last year a top pitcher and this year, they selected the best power hitter available, Byrce Harper of the College of Southern Nevada. The 17-year-old catcher is much ballyhooed and much hyped about all season. The scouting report on him is he has prodigious power ala Adam Dunn, Josh Hamilton, Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols, Carlos Lee and Travis Hafner. His power stroke is that strong.

Harper was selected as a catcher but was introduced by commissioner Bud Selig as an outfielder.

Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said that his vision has Harper as number 3 type power hitter with a strong arm and will play right-field.

Harper hit .443 with 31 home runs 98 RBI’s in his first college season in a wood bat league, after skipping his final two years of high school and getting his GED.

Harper says, “he has always wanted to be a MLB player since he was 7 years old”.
