NBA’s sportsmanship award goes to Golden State’s Curry


Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has been named the Joe Dumars Trophy presented annually to the NBA player who best exemplifies sportsmanship.

Out of a possible 347 first-place votes, Curry received 88 from his fellow players. Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls was second with 84 and Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge was third with 56.

Each team nominates one player for the award, and a panel of former players select six divisional winners. The other nominees were D.J. Augustin of Charlotte, Deron Williams of New Jersey and George Hill of San Antonio.

The NBA will donate $5,000 on behalf of each player to a charity of their choice. However, with Curry being names the winner, the league will donate $10,000 on behalf of him to Habitat for Humanity East Bay, which builds affordable homes for families.

Number 1 Duke easily beats Miami University

Seth Curry scored 17 points and the Duke Blue Devils (2-0) routed the Miami RedHawks in the second round of the CBE Classic. Curry is the younger brother of Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry and the son of former NBA star Dell Curry.

Nick Winbush scored 14 points for Miami University, who lost their 15th straight game against ranked opponents.

Duke Blue Devils picked as the #1 men’s basketball team i preseason poll

The defending national champion Duke Blue Devils are the popular choice as the nation’s number 1 men’s basketball team.

The ranking is from the Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll.

The Blue Devils have two starters back on a rsoter that features ballyhooed freshman Kyrie Irving and transfer Seth Curry, the younger brother of NBA star Stephen Curry and the son of former NBA and Virginia Tech great Dell Curry.

The rest of the top five include Michigan State at #2, Kansas State was third and Ohio State 4th and Pittsburgh fifth.

The rest of the top 10, Villanova, Kansas, North Carolina, Florida and Syracuse.

The only other Big Ten teams who were ranked, include #13 Illinois and #14 Purdue.

Stephen Curry has contract extended by Warriors

The Golden State Warriors have exercised their third-year contract option on Stephen Curry for their 2011-2012 season.

The 2nd-year guard was last season’s runner-up for the NBA Rookie of the Year.

Curry, who is 22, averaged 17.5 points, 5.9 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.90 steals in 80 games in 2009-2010. He played 36.2 minutes per game and was a unanimous pick for the All-Rookie First Team.

The first two years of Curry’s contract as a first-round draft pick were guaranteed, while his third and fourth years were at a team option. Curry, the son of former NBA star Dell Curry, was chosen seventh overall in the 2009 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors.

US basketball team uses 2nd half spurt to dumped Tunisia

The United States basketball team upped its record to 5-0 in the World basketball championships.

But for awhile on Thursday, it didn’t look like they would be able to shake winless Tunisia.

The Americans turned a sluggish game into a rout the last 15 minutes of the contest to win 92-57.

Eric Gordon scored 21 points for the United States.

The USA squad seeded first in Group B, will play next on Monday against Angola, the number 4 seed from Group A.

Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook each scored 14 points for the U.S. squad and Stephen Curry chipped in with 13.

Tunisia, making its first appearance in the world basketball championships, went 0-5, and was led in scoring by Marouan Kechrid with 15 points.
