Ducks’ Carlyle coaches 500th game in loss to Chicago

Teemu Selanne scored a goal and contributed an assist for the Ducks in head coach Randy Carlyle’s 500th game behind the Anaheim bench.

The Ducks lost to Chicago 3-2 in a shootout.

The 55-year-old Carlyle is a former defenseman as a player with Winnipeg, Pittsburgh and Toronto.

He has 270 wins as a head coach with 5 playoff appearances and 1 Stanley Cup.

Blackhawks GM Bowman gets extension

The son of legendary hockey coach Scotty Bowman is making his mark with the Chicago Blackhawks and is being rewarded for it.

The Blackhawks have given Stan Bowman a three-year contract extension through the 2015-16 season.

The 38-year-old Bowman, who is the youngest general manager in the NHL, is entering his 11th season with Chicago and third as head of team operations.

Chicago won the Stanley Cup two years ago, stopping a 49-year drought without winning a championship.

Philadelphia-Boston kick off NHL regular-season on national TV

The National Hockey League will kick off its regular season with a national television doubleheader featuring the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins.

The Bruins will host the rival Philadelphia Flyers in the first of two games on the NBC Sports Network, formerly Versus on October 6, and the Pittsburgh Penguins will visit Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks in the nightcap.

NBC’s first game will be November 25, the day after Thanksgiving, when Boston plays host to the Detroit Red Wings.

The network will air the Winter Classic on January 2 as the New York Rangers play at Philadelphia.

NBC Sports Group and the NHL are getting ready to enter the first year of a 10-season deal reportedly worth $2 billion.

The Bruins’ Stanley Cup-clinching win against the Canucks in June earned a 4.8 rating, the NHL’s highest-rated game in 37 years.

U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame selects 5 for 2011 induction

The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame has selected its 2011 induction class.

Former NHL stars Chris Chelios, Keith Tkachuk and Gary Suter have been selected for induction.

The induction will take place this coming fall.

Also joining the induction class, Philadelphia Flyers founder and current owner Ed Snider along with play-by-play announcer Mike Emrick.

Chelios played a remarkable 26 NHL seasons with Montreal, Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta. He retired after 2009-10 season as the all-time leader in games played by a defenseman (1,651). He was also part of three Stanley Cup championships.

Tkachuk played nearly two decades and is one of just four American-born players to score 500 career NHL goals.

Suter spent most of his 17 seasons with Calgary and helped the Flames to a Stanley Cup in 1989.

NHL STANLEY CUP FINALS: Boston adds its name to Lord Stanley’s Cup by beating Vancouver in game seven

The Boston Bruins have been added to that list of team’s who nobody thought would win the Stanley Cup. Since 2000, they join Colorado (2000-01), New Jersey (2002-03), Tampa Bay (2003-04), Carolina (2005-06), Anaheim (2006-07), Pittsburgh (2008-09) and Chicago last year.

After a 39-year hiatus without winning a Stanley Cup, the Bruins stole the series from the favored-Vancouver Canucks, 4 games to 3.

Goaltender Tim Thomas, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the most valuable player of the NHL postseason, made 37 saves in posting the second shutout of the Finals.

Patrice Bergeron and rookie Brad Marchand scored two goals apiece, and the Bruins beat the Canucks 4-0 on Wednesday night to win bring their first championship to Beantown since 1972.

43-year-old Mark Recchi has won his third Stanley Cup with a third franchise, plans to retire.

The Vancouver Canucks are 41-years-old and have never won a Stanley Cup and this was the closest they came to doing so.
